Gods that Were damn it. He was not going to let her make this be about duty.
“Aly, am I your friend or your servant?”
She paused.
“Let’s go upstairs. Tell me what happened, make it look like you’re behaving. If you’re still angry in two marks, I’ll go along with whatever crazy scheme I know you’ve already planned.”
When she turned around, Nic knew he was done for. Her eyes narrowed, and the smirk lighting her face made him wonder if there still was a god of death, after all.
“Is that a promise, friend?”
“Is the Achivalderan sun hot? Is the High Tower tall?”
They made for the grand curving staircase in the back of the hall. She stiffened as she started to walk again.
Nic fluttered to her side. “Your ribs, still? You said they were getting better.”
She waved him away. “It’s nothing.” But she reached for her right side before she straightened. “You were right, I am already scheming.”
Tael save him, of course she was. On Nic’s tenth-name day, when his father told him he’d have the honor of being Aly’s retainer, she’d plotted to free all the falcons in the rookery. She’d shown up to his name day celebration with her red hair matted with bird shit, grinning from ear to ear. In the six years since, her ploys never ceased.
“What are we getting ourselves into this time?”
She paused on the grand staircase and moved close to him, so her breath was warm on his ear. “My father thinks he can show me my place? I’ll show him where I belong. Tonight, we’re sneaking onto a Royal Guard patrol.”

absolutely obsessed and in love with the I'm in Love With Mothman series by @paigelavoieauthor . I highly highly recommend it if you're looking for a spooky but cozy romance book to read! Of course, it's got everyone's favorite cryptid mothman, and a burnt-out influencer who moves to a cottage in the woods (super relateable lol). But anyways, wanted to do my spin on the author's #dtiys challenge posted over on her page, so this was created! It was meant to be just a colored sketch but it just evolved from that haha.
