If we’re just meeting for the first time — hi, I’m Asher. I make wedding photos and films for couples who value these things: Positivity. Artistry. Honesty. Vulnerability. Legacy. I believe in real connection — the kind you feel in your chest. In grandma’s laugh from the second row. In the wild dance-floor chaos. In the quiet moments no one else got to see. Your story deserves to be remembered the way you’ll you lived it so when you want to relive it years from now, you feel — warm, nostalgic, beautiful, and true. I’m based in Duluth, MN, but I’ll follow your love wherever it takes me. I shoot digital + film, offer photo/video bundles, and keep a limited number of engagement sessions each year so I can be fully present with every couple. If you’re dreaming up a wedding that feels intimate, intentional, or deeply you — I’d love to be part of it. Comment RINGS and I'll send you a dm. — Asher James Your Wedding Editorial Photojournalist. For the Northern Romantics.

Here’s what I see at every wedding: the real magic isn’t always in the big obvious moments — it’s in the moments you didn’t have planned. The quiet deep breath during your makeup. The big smile that hurts before the first look. The ‘real’ kiss in-between the performative ones. That’s why I created the Legacy Package. Full-day coverage so you can stop watching the clock and actually be present in your own story. Getting ready → dance floor. Big moments → tiny ones you didn’t even notice. It’s my most popular package for a reason: When you’re not rushed, the photos feel deeper, truer, more like you. If you want a spacious, intentional, fully documented wedding day… you may have just stumbled upon your wedding photographer. Comment “LEGACY” below and I’ll send details + your discovery call link. ✨📸

Jackie and Troy’s 2024 wedding was a pivot point for me. It wasn’t anything overly dramatic, but I now see it as the start of me recognizing that the small moments are just as worth chasing as the big ones. The black and white of Jackie in the hair and makeup chair? (Forth slide) She looks like a ‘golden age Hollywood star’ getting ready for the Oscars. The light just fell right, the contrast, the composition, it was perfect, but I didn’t know it at the time. Ten seconds later I moved on to photographing something else. Still one of my favorites to this day. …and of course anytime I get to work with my photographer friend, @rachel.lea.photo makes for a great day of creativity ❤️

Engagement sessions are often framed as a date that the photographer is just tagging along on, and as cute as that sentiment is, it’s not really what’s happening... I used to say this, I used to think this way, but inherently, when a camera is present, and the whole point of why you are there with your subjects is to photograph them, there can be a dissonance between authenticity and performance. Now, I’ve reframed (photography pun) how I approach and coach my clients through an engagement session. We are going to design a session that captures the romantic feeling of being on a date by creating a narrative to guide us. Using our favorite movies, songs, books, various inspirations, etc. we’ll build a simple little narrative story to follow for the session. I personally love using romance movies as a visual guide in posing and prompting. Because when is real life do you push your partner up against a fence, lean into them, and give them a kiss? But damn does it make for a good photo ❤️

If you’re a photographer in Northern Minnesota, then you know just how special a wedding up the North Shore of Lake Superior is—the wind, the trees, the way time seems to slow down. Alberto + Emily’s wedding at Larsmont Cottages was just that. These two have grown up together, side by side, and you could see that not only in their photographs and slideshows at the reception, but in the relationship they’ve cultivated together. Every touch, every moment of laughter, held years and years of built up memories of life together. From heartfelt vows on the shoreline to dancing under string lights while the lake behind them faded into dusk, this was one of those days that reminds me why I do what I do. Honest, emotional, artful storytelling—anchored in legacy, light, and love. THE DREAM TEAM Photography: @asherjames.co Venue: @larsmont_cottages Floral: @superiorblooms Bridal: @jennyyoonyc

Watching your friends get married hits differently. Brody and Tiffany aren’t just a couple I filmed — they’re people I’ve known since college. People I’ve spend many a night in college basements with and now, years later, get to watch them slowly build a life together. Their wedding at The Grand at Mulligan’s was all about personal meaning. Private vows shared quietly. A ceremony that made space for loved ones who couldn’t be there in person. Readings that felt playful and honest, not performative, except for the Adam Sandler bit that was executed perfectly. Speeches that somehow managed to be funny and have the room crying at the same time. Getting to preserve this chapter for friends is something I don’t take lightly. This wedding holds laughter, pauses, inside jokes, and words that will matter more with time. Brody & Tiffany — I’m so grateful I got to be there, not just as your photographer & filmmaker, but as someone who’s known you for a long time. 🤍 THE DREAM TEAM Our team: Team/Video Lead - @asherjames.co Lead Photo - @reece_hickman Second/Assist - @drake.fiske Additional Credits: Venue - @grandsatmulligansevents DJ Entertainment - @djblakk.ent Celebrant - Tim Roberts Floral - @lakesidefloral Wedding Gown - @vowdweddings Bridesmaid Dresses - David’s Bridal Suits / Suit Hire - @milbernclothingco Cake Maker - @grandsatmulligansevents Catering - @grandsatmulligansevents Makeup Artist - @bridalglowbeautyco Hair Stylist - @bridalglowbeautyco

Here’s the thing about these two: they make everything feel unhurried. Even over our inquiry call, there was this calm — the kind that makes you want to slow down, sit back, and actually listen. They’re planning a small spring wedding at the beautiful Van Dusen Mansion — Forty people. Good food. No wedding party. A day built around the things that actually matter. During their engagement session, they moved the same way they talked: easy, thoughtful, in their own little world. She told me she wanted photos that felt candid and nostalgic, with that vintage, film-inspired vibe she’d been searching for. When she was googling for photographers, she actually searched: “film photographers in Minnesota” and google AI recommended me strait off the bat, that was cool to hear. She also said she wanted something honest, a little editorial, but nothing stiff or over-posed. No standing in a random field, she actually said that verbatim haha — she wanted personality, texture, and real connection And when I sent their final engagement photos, Erica’s messages lit me up: “OMG they are STUNNING.” “Absolutely perfect.” “Exactly what I envisioned.” That’s what I’m chasing every time — images that feel warm and nostalgic. Images that feel like you, at this time, in this place. Counting down the days until their wedding. This one’s going to be special. Stay tuned.

“I want that moment to be very magical... I had originally kind of wanted to get married in a forest... I would love that sort of vibe, if that makes sense.” Me: “I got you.” Bailey and Billy’s day ended up being nothing short of that magic—private vows in a shady grove behind the stunning Cathedral of Christ the King, a ceremony that honored tradition and memory, and a reception that echoed of old-world glamour in every carved detail and gold-plated ceiling. They made space for joy, reflection, and celebration—not just with each other, but with the people who helped shape their story. From the soft slowness of the morning to the electricity of the dance floor, it was a day layered with intention, love, and a whole lot of laughter. Honored doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel to have been the one to document it all. Grateful for this day, this couple, and the memories that I get to preserve. 🤍 Dream Team: Beauty @beautybyjoy2 Hair @hair_art_by_ali Venue @greysolonduluth DJ A Main Event #DuluthWedding #MNweddingphotographer #GreysolonBallroom #MinnesotaWeddings #CathedralWedding #WeddingPhotojournalism #AsherJamesWeddings

You ever roll into work on a Monday morning still feeling the weekend? Yeah… that’s me. But it’s not college-party-hangover feeling—it’s more like “my heart is full and my SD cards are too” kind of feeling. Here’s the real reason why I'm a wedding photographer… 1. LEGACY Photos are proof we were here. They’re how we remember, how we honor, how we keep the people we love close—even long after they’re gone. 2. POSITIVITY Most jobs aren’t built around champagne toasts and lots of kissing (unless you work on Love Island). I get to show up to a celebration every single weekend. 3. THE LOVE I know it sounds cheesy—but when two humans find that kind of connection? The kind you witness and makes you forget how hard you're smiling like a psycho... just me? Every story wrecks me in the best way. I'm all in. 4. COMMUNITY The wedding industry is pure magic. A team of artists and planners and parent whisperers who care deeply and work hard. I’m honored to stand among them. 5. Selfishly? I JUST LOVE IT! This job feeds my soul. I get to create. I get to connect. I get to support my family doing something that lights me up. Now it’s your turn ↓ Why do you photograph weddings? Let’s flood the comments with stories that remind us why this work matters. (And maybe cry a little together in the process.)
