“Where are all the women?”
It’s a question we started asking ourselves early on in Ramadan, looking back at our own distribution photos. Crowds of people receiving food. Long lines. Families being helped, but almost no women in sight.
Not because they didn’t need it. But because in Afghanistan, women, especially widows, don’t come to public distributions. They stay home. They break their fast with whatever little they have, in silence, waiting for Ramadan to pass.
So we stopped waiting for them to come to us.
Our ataalan went to them instead. Into their streets, to their doors, into their homes. Every one of them received a full Ramadan food package, enough to feed her family of 7 for 15 days. And every woman was registered with her own OMID ID, so she can be found and supported long after Ramadan ends.
This Women’s Day, we want to reach 100 widows this way.
One Ramadan package is $73. It goes directly to a widow’s home, not a queue she was never going to stand in.

So, we decided to gather them together in a restaurant, share a warm meal, and spend time listening to their stories.

But for a few moments, things felt different.
