On an overcast spring evening in New York, more than 350 guests gathered beneath the soaring arches of Gotham Hall for the 2026 Gala of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, an event that paired elegance with a precise sense of mission. The evening marked the centennial of the Gennadius Library, one of the world’s leading research libraries devoted to Greek history, literature, and culture from late antiquity to the present, and honored archaeologist Jack L. Davis, the Carl W. Blegen Professor of Greek Archaeology at the University of Cincinnati and a former Director of the American School, with the Athens Prize. Davis, widely recognized for his work at Pylos and his contributions to the study of Mycenaean civilization, has helped reshape modern understanding of the ancient Greek world. The Gala brought together business executives, scholars, philanthropists, and leaders in the arts in support of the study and preservation of Greek history and culture. The evening served as the culmination of Gala Week, a series of programs across New York City that began with a Conversation with Jack L. Davis at 15 Hudson Yards, followed by a reception hosted in honor of Gala sponsors. Additional events included a lunch and conversation at the New York Yacht Club highlighting recent archival acquisitions, and the Thalia Potamianos Lecture by Dr. Katherine E. Fleming at NYU Skirball, which was open to the public. Together, these gatherings reflected the breadth of the American School’s work and its engagement with both scholarly and public audiences. Paul Getty Trust, delivered a powerful lecture, “To Die Like a True Greek: Greeks and Jews Since World War II,” as part of the Thalia Potamianos Lecture Series. The American School extends its sincere gratitude to Phokion Potamianos, whose generous support makes this distinguished lecture series possible. The lecture drew a full audience and sparked thoughtful discussion well into the evening. “Katherine Fleming’s scholarship challenges us to confront the full complexity of Greek history. Natalia Vogeikoff-Brogan, Doreen C. Spitzer Director of Archives, Professor Mary Scranton, Professor Emerita at Stony Brook University, and David W. Myers, retired architect formerly of Capital Projects Development for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, highlighted recent acquisitions, including the Philip Sherrard Papers, a painting by Georg von Peschke, and the J. Wilson Myers and Eleanor E. Myers Aerial Photography Collection. Guests had the opportunity to view select materials up close, offering a tangible connection to the School's rich history. Gala Week 2026 opened Tuesday evening at the stunning 15 Hudson Yards with a special kickoff event for Gala sponsors, beginning with an intimate conversation featuring our 2026 Athens Prize recipient, Professor Jack L. Davis, whose landmark excavations at Pylos have transformed our understanding of Bronze Age Greece. Birds, Dogs, and Plants in the Athenian Agora! On Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23, as part of the Green Cultural Routes, we invite you to a special walk through the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora of Athens. In this free thematic tour, we will explore the flora and fauna of the Agora, looking at both the plants and animals that were part of everyday life in antiquity. Dogs and birds will take center stage: what was their role in the ancient city? What species existed, and which of them can still be found today in the archaeological park? Were there flowerpots in the Ancient Agora? Through stops at monuments and the museum, we will explore the relationship between humans and nature over time. Join us on this route! On Friday, April 24, our Athens staff hit the road for our annual staff field trip! This year we were guided on a fascinating tour of the wider area of Marathon by Eirini Dimitriadou, Assistant to the Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations, as we explored the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods, the Tomb of the Athenians, and the Αrchaeological Museum of Marathon, followed by lunch at a nice seaside taverna. What a day! —————— Την Παρασκευή 24 Απριλίου πραγματοποιήθηκε η ετήσια εκδρομή του προσωπικού της Σχολής στην Αθήνα. Με ξεναγό την Ειρήνη Δημητριάδου, Assistant to the Director of the Athenian Agora Excavations, είχαμε την ευκαιρία να απολαύσουμε μια συναρπαστική περιήγηση στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Μαραθώνα, κατά την οποία επισκεφθήκαμε το Ιερό των Αιγυπτίων Θεών, τον Τύμβο των Αθηναίων Μαραθωνομάχων και το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Μαραθώνα. Η εκδρομή ολοκληρώθηκε με μεσημεριανό γεύμα σε μια όμορφη παραθαλάσσια ταβέρνα. Μια πραγματικά υπέροχη μέρα!

The final article in the latest issue of Hesperia (95.1) is “St. Demetrios, the Gladiatorial Combats, and the Stadium of Thessaloniki” by Michalis Karambinis. The article explores the martyrdom accounts of St. Demetrios who was reportedly executed in Thessaloniki during the reign of Galerius in the early 4th century CE. The martyrdom texts mention the stadium of Thessaloniki as the site of gladiatorial games, making the accounts the only known literary sources that describe modifications made to stadia to accommodate such spectacles.
