Americas Society is pleased to present “Lilia Carrillo: Ruptures and Premonitions,” curated by Tobias Ostrander, an insightful survey of the groundbreaking Mexican painter’s work featuring two dozen major paintings alongside rare archival materials.
Carrillo’s place within the Generación de la Ruptura shows how her work challenged dominant artistic traditions through abstraction, formal innovation, and the dynamic physicality of the painted surface. The exhibition spotlights key works spanning from 1961—when Carrillo’s mature visual language came into focus—to 1974, the year of her untimely death.
On view from May 13 to August 1 at Americas Society. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

In the latest #LatAmFocus episode, @cebrionline 's @fernanda.magnotta takes the temperature of the U.S.-Brazil relationship after a highly anticipated May meeting between Presidents Lula and Trump focused on tariffs and rare earths.
“The U.S. wants speed and geopolitical security,” she told AS/COA Online’s @luisaleme , “and Brazil wants, particularly with the rare earths and critical minerals, industrial sovereignty and greater value capture.”
In a critical election year for both leaders, can the two largest economies in the Americas bargain their way out of snags in the bilateral relationship?

Today, May 1, marks the start of the long-awaited EU-Mercosur trade agreement.
In a trade landscape increasingly shaped by U.S. tariff policies, says @kelliemhock , deals like this show that Latin American countries are trying “to have as many solid trading partners right now as possible.”

The IMF/WB Spring Meetings bring Latin America's top economic voices to Washington where many visited our DC office to meet with COA members.
From April 13-17, we hosted private meetings with finance ministers and central bank heads from Honduras, Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, and Panama, among them Julio Velarde (@bcrpoficial ), Roberto Lagos (Central Bank of Honduras), Julieta Suazo Franco (CNBS Honduras), Daniel Leal (National Treasury of Brazil), @jmenkos (@minfingt ), Gabriel Oddone (Uruguayan Minister of Economy and Finance), and @felipechapman (Ministry of Economy and Finance of Panama).
Of the 3 remaining elections in Latin America in 2026, Colombia arguably has the highest stakes — extremely divergent views in a country facing acute security, economic and institutional challenges. We put together a dream panel with José Antonio Ocampo and Juan Esteban Orduz (and possibly a 3rd panelist to be announced).
