Tomorrow! Join us - Monday 14 October for a tour and talk of St Andrews with #daewhakangdesign talking about their impactful regeneration interior designs for Wren’s largest parish church. Pre-lecture tour - St Andrews, Holborn, 5 St Andrews Street, London EC4A 3AF at 5 pm Lecture - The Alan Baxter Gallery, 77 Cowcross Street, EC1M 6EL at 6.30pm . The lecture by architect DaeWha Kang will present the design evolution and outcome of the complete interior regeneration of Christopher Wren’s largest parish church, St Andrews, Holborn. Our speaker and will lead a site tour of St Andrews at 5 pm in advance of his paper, delivered at the Alan Baxter Gallery . With its interior gutted by an incendiary bomb in World War II, the church was reconstructed by the architects Seely and Paget in the early 1960’s. Daewha Kang Design completed the new interior design and lighting scheme for this Grade I Listed church. The general approach is one of creating a harmonious and calm space, whilst introducing a series of contemporary altarpieces and religious artefacts to complement their scheme and the churches theological practice.

WHAT: Robert Lloyd-Sweet: Regeneration of the High Street WHERE: THE GALLERY 77 Cowcross Street EC1M 6EJ in-person, on ZOOM online see website and Eventbrite WHEN: WEDNESDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 6:30pm START (doors open 6pm at The Gallery) In 2017 Historic England launched a new place-based scheme seeking to work in partnership with councils, communities and businesses and focusing a range of services and grant aid in newly defined Heritage Action Zones. These were intended to generate growth and investment, develop capacity to manage the historic environment and to improve the conservation of heritage assets. Three phases of this programme and the subsequent High Streets Heritage Action Zones programme have seen focused work in 87 historic places, many of them town centres. The path to delivery over the past 7 years has seen many challenges which will be considered, but also some highlghted the factors for success, including many unexpected. The work of architectural research and conservation has been essential in the process to avoid creating’just another shopfront scheme’ but to ensure that historic buildings and towns have seen meaningful conservation to sustain and restore their history and sense of place.

Next ASCHB talk: 25 OCT 2023 ARE WE OVER DESIGNING OUR MASONRY BUILDINGS? ASCHB President, Michael Beare, looks at the development of regulations of masonry in buildings. The Married Inspectors’ Quarters of the Old Central Police Station in Hong Kong partially collapsed during works in 2016. Built in the early 1860s, it had been declared as a historic monument in 1995. The initial conclusions by the authorities of the causes of the collapse were later overturned in court. Michael compares the variance in the strength of binders and factors of safety built into the current Codes of Practice and asks if we are over designing our masonry buildings? This is a hybrid event, held at The Gallery at 77 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EL. If you want to attend online, please book through the separate Zoom Event. We will assemble at The Gallery at 6.00pm for a start of the presentation at 6.30pm TICKETS: /e/are-we-overdesigning-our-masonry-buildings-in-person-event-tickets-733649504417?aff=oddtdtcreator
