Hello! 🤍☁️🪽🪽🪽🗡️🗡️🏹✨✨✨✨
My name is Athina, and I am neurodivergent.
In 2018, I received my diagnosis after many years of struggling with various health issues that kept driving me to many different doctors without ever finding a solution.
Neurodivergent is an umbrella term used to describe a person whose mind is not neurotypical, that is someone who shows differences in cognitive, analytical, social or other neurobiological functions compared to the average person.
The reason I mention this now is because on one hand more and more people are becoming aware of what this can mean, and on the other hand because lately through questions I receive about my work and artistic expression, I find myself referring more and more to my diagnosis, as I see it inseparably connected to the way I perceive the world and the way I choose to transform that perception into art.
At this stage, I do not wish to further specify my diagnosis, but I would like to mention that this particular series of works Angel Energy which was just presented in Athens this past Saturday, was created during a very hard period for my mind and a difficult phase I was going through. Behind every colour and visual contrast I use, lies my mental effort to understand the complexity of what I was experiencing and to ‘tame chaos’ as my close friend
@marsblackbird put it so accurately.
Finally, another reason I mention this, is because from the outside we can very easily judge the conditions of someone’s life and the work they produce (artistic or otherwise) while largely overlooking the unique and invisible difficulties that this person may be facing.
This post is dedicated to all the neurodivergent individuals I have met and to the honoring me by sharing their diagnosis! Little by little the world will have more space and understanding for us and of that I am absolutely certain!
