Douglas Kirkland is sent by LOOK magazine to photograph Coco Chanel â a 20-something photographer walking into one of the most controlled environments in fashion.
Chanel doesnât give him much. No real access at first. Just distance and observation.
So he keeps it simple â shoots quietly, watches how she works, doesnât force it.
The shift comes when she sees the photographs. She approves.
From there, heâs allowed in â spending weeks inside her atelier, documenting her process, her fittings, her discipline. ïżŒ
Those images became one of the most intimate records of Chanel at work â and one of the assignments that defined Kirklandâs career.
