Tree of life 3 continents. Woodcut printed from 9 blocks on 9 aluminium panels Ink, watercolour, tempera. 198 cm x 149 cm This work is a contemplation and reflection on the complex intersection of three continents, Australia, the UK and India. The image of the tree is a hybridisation of three indigenous trees. On the upper left is an Australian Lemon Scented Eucalypt (Corymbia citriodora) the English Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) on the top right half of the print and the National tree of India, Indian Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) appears in the bottom half of the work, symbolizing the intersection of colonized and native habitats. Integrated into this hybrid are bird representations of species from the Indian subcontinent including the Indian Eagle Owl, (Bubo bengalensis), the Racket tiled Drongo, and the Paradise Flycatcher , (Terpsiphone). Also embedded in the work are representations of pages from the diary of John Cotton (1802–1849), a Victorian naturalist and pastoralist, featuring his detailed illustrations of Eastern Australian bird species from that era. This woodcut reflects on the interplay of habitats and their species, bridging past and present. It is exploration of ecological and cultural convergence, using the hybrid tree as a metaphor for the blending of colonized landscapes. The inclusion of endemic Indian Subcontinent bird species and Cotton’s bird illustrations both a contemporary and historical layer, connecting the 19th-century colonial perspective to present reflections on habitat interplay. The Eucalyptus, native to Australia, represents resilience in arid environments, while the English Ash a European species, evokes the introduced flora of colonial expansion and the Banyan signifies the deep cultural roots of Indian culture. Merging these trees symbolically bridges the native and the foreign, highlighting tensions and harmonies in shared ecosystems, inviting viewers to consider how past interactions with nature shape present environmental narratives.

Wonderful to see my work hanging on the wall in India as part of the 3rd Print Biennale. What a wonderful world we live in, that makes it possible for a print made here in Australia to travel so far, and be part of a shared international conversation through art. Feeling very grateful. Thanks to Martin King @artmartz for obtaining the photo for me! Martin is also exhibiting there. #3rdPrintBiennaleIndia #AustralianPrintmaker #Printmaking #ArtExhibitions #Linocut #ContemporaryPrint
