Join us at Northridge Branch LAPL for We Write the Book, the culminating event of artist Debra Disman's bookmaking residency at the library. Disman is a recipient of DCA's Neighborhood Engagement Artist Residency (NEAR) grant this year. As a part of this residency, Debra has conducted eleven bookmaking workshops for the community at the Northridge Branch Library!

About the grant:
Each year, Neighborhood Engagement Artist Residency (NEAR) grants support freelance teaching artists, social-activation artists, and social practice artists in community-based, participatory projects in artist-selected non-arts venues within the City of Los Angeles. NEAR projects gather, connect, and inspire participants and audiences who have little exposure to arts and cultural opportunities. A Los Angeles–based artist, Debra’s work bridges books, textiles, sculpture, and installation to create spaces of wonder, reflection, and connection. Her practice weaves together making, teaching, and community engagement, and her pieces have been shown in museums and art centers across the country.
This season she’s creating an original, interactive tapestry for our High Holidays - a chance for our community to experience art as part of our sacred gatherings.

Springing initially from the form of the book, my work traverses textiles, sculpture, installation and performance to push the familiar into forms that arrest, baffle and bewilder, while simultaneously offering moments of rest, solace and contemplation. As Bertolt Brecht wanted to do, I seek to "make the strange familiar, and the familiar strange" as a way of changing our perception and illuminating a sudden experience of
truth.
I employ the materiality of fiber to engage the senses and invite altered ways of experiencing the world and our place in it, both soothing and confounding the eye with uneven visual repetition. Through this means of stabilizing and destabilizing, I hope to instigate fundamental questions that encourage an examination of what we think we know and are.
