There are a bunch of new faces lately and it’s been a hot minute since my last intro post, so it’s time for a reintroduction! I’m Jen Karner, a crow cleverly disguised as a human and I write Fantasy & Horror (with kissing). I’m also a giant book nerd with a pair of very fluffy 4 legged children (a dog & cat respectively), and a love for pastries. How do you stay motivated to keep writing when your brain doesn't wanna? NGL I've had a hard time writing lately. It's not that I don't WANT to, so much as I'm stuck figuring out what to do and where to go. This is the hardest part of a book for me: when I have a 0 draft that needs major fixes but I can't quite figure out how to fix it. That's why I have journals. Pictured are two of my (many!!) journals. The first is dedicated to figuring out Hallowed Ground and goes all the way back to August of 2019 when I started working on this book. 😱 The second is for general authoring, intensives, new story ideas etc. Writing by hand is ALWAYS my go to when I get stuck. I try to keep a journaling habit in general, and then I keep handwritten notes while working on a book too. Heck, Sins of Survival filled almost TWO WHOLE NOTEBOOKS!! Late last year, after picking the release date for Sins of Survival, I knew I needed to start spending more time on social media. I’ve never been exactly what anyone would call “consistent” especially when its hot outside and I want to crawl in a cave and hide all summer. But starting in December, I made the choice to try posting every day. I built a schedule and kept to it, picking a day during the week when I could create and schedule my content for the next week. However, it meant that instead of focusing on writing my next book I was focusing on if my posts were going up. If I had made everything I needed to. I was spending more time thinking about social media than I was on any other part of being an author, and for me, it just wasn’t sustainable. Here’s the thing. I’m not necessarily the most “aesthetic” person, and trying to come up with constant content left me feeling exhausted and mostly uninterested in opening up my manuscript after work. It’s not that I don’t enjoy social media, because I do. But posting everyday wasn’t working for me. Then, in Feb I lost my freelance work contract, and was suddenly spiraling about how I was going to pay my bills. It was rough yall. Thankfully, in March I made some changes. I decided instead of flooding the algorithm with constant content no matter what was going on, I opted to be more authentic in how I engage. What does that mean? Some weeks I might only post once or twice, other times it might be all week long. It depends on what I have going on, what’s happening in my life, and whether I have news to share. I also found a new FT job in March, which means for the first time in several years, I’m working 40 hrs/week and I just don’t have the ✨time✨ to spend hours each week creating new posts that will catch your eye. I hope you’ll stick around through the highs and lows though. I can’t thank you enough for supporting my stories, and letting me follow my dreams. 🖤 #authorlife #writingcommunity #bookish
