“All international and national organisations which do the monitoring of the attacks and threats against journalists, all of them confirm in their databases that the number of cases is three times more for previous year than it was in the previous year”. To mark #WorldPressFreedomDay 2026, the Media Freedom Rapid Response hosted a webinar bringing together leading voices from Serbia’s media landscape: Tamara Filipović @nuns_1994 nuns_1994, @bozamilovac Milovac @krik.rs and Stefan Goranović. The discussion, moderated by Roberta Taveri @article19org explored the escalating pressures facing independent journalism in Serbia, and the responsibility of the EU to respond.

70 days of enforced silence for millions in Iran. 70 days of families and friends unable to communicate. 70 days of journalists cut off from the world. 70 days of fear, isolation and uncertainty. The internet shutdown conceals violence, blocks the flow of information and keeps people in the dark, while arrests, executions and abuses continue behind closed doors. It is a tool of repression and a violation of human rights. End the #internetshutdown. Restore free internet access. Stand with the people of #Iran.

Governments and law enforcement are increasingly turning the Domain Name System – the backbone of the internet 🌐 – into a tool for censorship.  State actors weaponise the DNS to silence critics, pressuring domain operators to shut down entire internet domains.  Blocking content at the DNS level is like damming a river to catch a fish 🐟: indiscriminate, unnecessary, and a serious threat to our right to speak and to know. Our new report uncovers cases of abuse and sets out what needs to change so that DNS remains an open infrastructure that enables access to information, not stifles it. 🔗 Link in bio.

60 Days of Silence.   For 60 days, the people of Iran have been cut off from the world. They cannot contact their loved ones, share information, or check in on each other. Messages go unanswered, voices go unheard. This is not just an internet outage, it is a conscious effort to silence voices, hide reality, and exercise control.

The International Journalism Festival in Perugia is a unique space to reflect on the future of journalism and the challenges it faces. We are proud our colleagues played a part in such an invigorating space. A few key takeaways from this year: ➡️ Censorship is evolving – more subtle, harder to detect, and often framed in the language of democracy. ➡️ Trust in journalism continues to be undermined by coordinated attacks and disinformation. ➡️ AI is reshaping the information space, but accountability and real-world harms must stay at the centre of the conversation. What stood out most: the urgency to re-centre the debate on the public’s right to know, as well as the need for stronger collaboration and support for independent journalism. In a rapidly shifting information environment, protecting media freedom remains essential. #journalism #righttoknow #informationintegrity #freeexpression #freedomofexpression

New report! Targeted explores the global impact of US foreign aid cuts on freedom of expression, and the people working to defend it. Our research reveals the scale of the damage: 🔹Diminished protection for journalists and human rights defenders 🔹Shrinking civic space 🔹Weakened ability to counter digital authoritarianism and promote internet freedom 🔹Reduced support for independent media 🔹Curtailed capacity to address harmful impacts of disinformation The cuts are now worsening the existing crises of freedom of expression and democracy around the world. Now more than ever, civil society needs sustained support – grounded in local priorities and designed to help it adapt, rebuild, and continue holding power to account. Iran must stop executions now. The international community must call on Iran to: • Cease confessions obtained under duress, and the broadcast of them • Release prisoners detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression • Establish a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty for offences not meeting the most serious crimes threshold • Publish comprehensive disaggregated data on executions • Ensure prompt access to legal counsel of the detainees’ choosing at all stages of proceedings Read the full statement (link in bio)

This week, ARTICLE 19 Europe had the honour of hosting Ales Bialiatski, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, founder of @viasna96 , and a key symbol of Belarusians’ fight for freedom and democracy. Bialiatski has dedicated his life to promoting human rights. For his public interest work, he has been imprisoned twice. On 13 December 2025, he was released, alongside over 100 other political prisoners, following an agreement between Belarus and the United States involving the lifting of certain trade sanctions. In his remarks, Bialiatski was clear: we must not be deceived by the illusion of quick diplomatic wins. The repression and the broader machinery of state violence in Belarus remain intact — and international support is needed more than ever. We must work together to keep Belarus high on the international agenda. There can be no lasting stability in the region without a free and democratic Belarus.

As war in the Middle East escalates following the US-Israeli attack on Iran, we raise urgent alarm about violations of international law, attacks on freedom of expression and the increasing information manipulation. Unlawful intervention is not a solution. We call for an immediate ceasefire and protection of civilians — international law, the foundation of global peace and security, must be respected.
