Martin Luther King Jr., born Michael Luther King, Jr., was an American Baptist minister, social activist, and a leader of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. He was known for his inspirational speeches and advancing civil rights for African-American citizens.
Between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over 6 million miles, spoke over 2,500 times; he was arrested over twenty times, assaulted four times, and his home was bombed. Meanwhile, he wrote five books, was awarded five honorary degrees and was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963.
On August 28, 1963, the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” drew more than 250,000 people in front of the Lincoln Memorial where King made his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
On October 14, 1964, at the age of 35, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting against racial inequality through nonviolent civil disobedience.
In 1968, King was planning another occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People’s Campaign. On the evening of April 4, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, he was assassinated.
Today, King continues to be remembered as one of the most inspiring and influential African-American leaders in history.
