Born and raised in Japan, artist Eiko Otak (@eiko_otake ) moved to the United States and pursued a career in the arts in 1972. 50 years later, she will mark the anniversary of her immigration with the event series, 50 Years of Being A Foreigner (@heritageasianart ). "I see myself as a blender, constantly traveling and absorbing ideas, histories, and visual languages from different regions... As a young Arab painter working in the United States, I am gradually finding my place within the New York art scene." - Latifa Alajlan (@lalajlan ) speaks about her work in a recent conversation with art currently. In their new show, THE SHAPE OF A DREAM IS BIGGER THAN A FRAME, artist Ayomide Okanlawon (@phinnygram ) explores the dream-like complexity of the image. Working across fashion and photography, the artist is bringing a new approach to photography as something built, rather than captured. The solo exhibition is now on view at the Lianna Foundation and Gallery (@lianna_fg ) in Lagos, Nigeria through May 30. 📸 Photo courtesy of Lianna Foundation and Gallery.

At times' inaugural exhibition, Nina Beier: Old Friends (@nina_beier_ ), a grid of half-melted ice cream cones scattered across the floor left a bold first impression. Founded by Francesca Sonara (francescasonara) and Summer Guthery (@summer_guthery ), times is anything but ordinary. During an age when long-standing galleries are closing and more artists are exhibiting work through informal channels, its founders have given times an expiration date of three years. As Guthery puts it, "We’re not trying to build a permanent institution - we’re interested in supporting artists during this particular moment.” Read the full article at artcurrently.com Words by Alison Andrea Lopez (@alison4ndrealopez ) Photo courtesy of times (@times.newyorkcity ) #artcurrently #contemporaryart #artgallery #nycexhibitions #exhibitionreview

"What am I going to do with this thing?" These were Kara Walker's (@kara_walker_official ) first words on encountering the 100-year-old statue of Confederate general Stonewall Jackson which she had been gifted. Walker's response echoes the central conundrum of MONUMENTS, showing currently across LA's MOCA (@moca ) and The Brick (@thebrick_la ). The historic show boldly addresses and re-envisions the imposing debris of America’s past. JJ Hammond (b. 2005, California) is a mixed media artist. Using repurposed toys, retro TVs, and light-based elements, she creates psychological installations that reflect on how family, culture, and technology quietly build who we become. For the group show ‘Paletas’, she stepped outside of her usual medium and created two digitally modified photographs of herself as a baby, continuing the same themes that run through her practice while moving into a more direct dialogue with her younger inner self. @_jjhammond_ @jjhammond.art • #miamiartist #miamiartgallery #hahausstudio #artexhitbition #miamiartgallery
