Announcing, 801 Salon No. 44 // Sweet but Strident Featuring work from Maria Samuelson @art.maria.samuelson Brooklynn Johnson @bwooklynn Halie Bahr @halie.bahr Presented by @801.salon Hosted by @red.flower.studios Curated by @roxannegray.co Opening Reception Saturday, May 23, 7-10 pm DJ set by @bassil_bb , live glass demos Red Flower Studios, 339 W 700 S, SLC Closing Reception Friday, June 12, 7-10 pm Performance by Halie Bahr at 8 pm Red Flower Studios, 339 W 700 S, SLC / registration link in bio / Sweet but Strident is a collection of visual works from Maria Samuelson and Brooklynn Johnson, with performance art from Halie Bahr. Each of these women is exploring womanhood not as a fixed identity, but as an evolving, negotiated condition. They engage with the complexities of inhabiting a gendered body and the ways it is seen, shaped, and remembered. Womanhood emerges as something stretched across competing demands, never static, always in flux. Womanhood is attentive to subtle shifts: the ways identity is worn down and rebuilt, how meaning accumulates through loss. Womanhood is relational and porous, continually formed in the interplay between vulnerability and care, between witnessing and being witnessed. These works attend to the realities of trauma, care, motherhood, loss, and memory, while resisting any singular definition. In doing so, they propose a vision of womanhood that is expansive and unsettled—one that embraces contradiction, holds space for fracture, and finds meaning in the ongoing act of reassembly. // 801 Salon is a 501(c)3 non profit dedicated to making art accessible to the community. We produce multidisciplinary art exhibits and performances around SLC, providing a platform for local artists to show their work ✨ If you’re interested in supporting our work, feel free to drop a donation at the links in bio. Red Flower Studios is an ADA accessible venue. If you have any accessibility requests, please feel free to reach out in advance. *reposted because of a typo in the flyer.

My artist residency at @lia_programme in the @spinnereileipzig in Leipzig, Germany has been fantastic—giving me time, space, and connections to allow my art to grow. I even gained access to a church in Sachsen-Anhalt from 1270 to create some installations, video, and photo works using my sewn forms. Thanks to all the LIA staff and Dieter from the Kakerbeck Dorfkirche. The music on the video was composed and played by my son Moses with whom I collaborated on some of my sewn geometries.

During our Spring Rundgang on the 25th and 26th of April, Maria Samuelson will perform a work she has developed during her residency at LIA. Employing one of her textile artworks suspended from the ceiling as an aerial hammock, she will enact an aerial micro-performance blending suspension, contortion, and constriction with a nod to the seventeenth-century martyr Mary Dyer. @art.maria.samuelson From 11am - 7pm on Saturday and 11am - 4pm on Sunday. Se you soon ☀️✨️💥

Presenting the exhibiting artists at our Spring Gallery Tour on the 25th and 26th of April, starting with Maria Samuelson ✨️ @art.maria.samuelson "My current work uses bra-making materials to reform and recontextualize the aesthetics of these textiles and their inherent assumptions. These materials are heavily associated with “unmentionables,” garments which are intimate and usually unseen, worn under more acceptable clothing. I am exploring an aesthetic of the tangible qualities of these substances: their stretch, their shine, their color, and the warping, molding, or other structure they reveal when combined in new ways. I create fabrics from elastics stitched together, and allow wires, boning, and channeling to dictate shapes for the textile around them, rather than to conform fabric to externally determined body shapes.”

We are thrilled to announce our 2026 and 2027 artist mothers for the Ramona Residency. Thank you to everyone who shared their work with us. It was heartwarming to review such fantastic work and witness the enthusiasm for this family friendly residency, a first-of-its-kind in Texas, dedicated solely to artist mothers. The sixteen artist mothers selected for seasons three and four represent a spectrum of disciplines, career trajectories, and geographical locations (including 5 international artists). We look forward to introducing you to each of these artist mothers over the next two years. More details on each artist’s practice can be found on our website ramonaresidency.com or at the link in our bio. As a grass roots fiscally sponsored non profit, we need your donations to help support the sixteen artist mothers over the next two years. Each residency requires $2500 per artist in financial support. If there is an artist you wish to underwrite or sponsor, please reach out to [email protected] or find the donation link in our bio. And be sure to sign up for our newsletter to stay informed about upcoming public programs and partnerships. We will do an open call in early 2027 for our 2028 season. ✨✨✨ 2026 May Jennifer Marion @jenlin.mar Maya Nguyen @the_maya_nguyen June Maddie Casagranda @maddiecasagranda July Nosheen Iqbal @noshii Mia Rollins @miarollins August Elizabeth Pedinotti Haynes @elizabethphaynes September Isabel Theselius @isabeltheselius November Maria Samuelson @art.maria.samuelson ✨✨✨ 2027 January Casey Galloway @_casey_galloway_metz_ February Mariana Najmanovich @mnajmanovich March Alexa Mazzarello @alexamazzarello April Jenne Giles @jennegilesart May Priya Kambli @kambli.priya June Laura Cleary Williams @lauraclearywilliams October Katharina Lehmann @katharinalehmann.art November Roxanne Ross @jeanpaul.seguin Image credits appear in the order of the resident attendance dates following the introduction slide. #houstonartscene #nonprofit #mother #residency #community
