“People, Times, and Lives” opens at Chorus this friday (3/6) from 7-9 PM and includes works by Miguel Caba, Morgan Maben, and Michael Fadugbagbe, as well as archival images from the Peter J. Cohen Collection (selected by Morgan Maben).
The idea for this show has been turning around in my mind since last year after reading an interview with Dev Hynes where he spoke about an approach to songwriting that revolved around specificity (full quote pictured above). The show began to take shape when I came across the Robert Rauschenberg note (also pictured above) in a book that my mother had given me and the words “People, Times, and Lives” became a way of thinking about specificity as a doorway to connection and relatability.
The works in this show are specific—hyper-specific—and reverberate with a uniqueness that can only be found in the individuality of our own lived experiences. And within that reverberation is where the door opens for us to enter into the emotions present. In Rauschenberg’s words: “Invite yourself”
I’m honored to announce Chorus, a curatorial project space located in Brooklyn (@chorusprojects ). Chorus is an extension and manifestation of my artistic and curatorial practice.
Chorus will open on January 10 at 6 PM for the opening reception of the inaugural exhibition, “One,” featuring works by John Bell Rush (@johnbellrush ), César López (@youngbauhaus ), Melissa Marks (@melissamarks.nyc ), Kelly Nano-Miranda (@kellynanomiranda ), and Pelumi Sokunbi (@pelumisokunbi ).
This project has been a dream of mine for some time now and I am so excited to see it come to life. Chorus will be open on Sundays from 12 — 5 PM and by appointment, outside of my full time work at Yancey Richardson.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, every conversation we’ve shared has led to this. Thank you to the 5 artists who are immortalized in this first ever show. Special thank you to my mom, whose work is included in “One,” and to my dad, who helped me paint these walls. And endless thanks to Pelumi for building chorusprojects.com.
I’m so excited to welcome everyone to Chorus! This is for you. See you Saturday, 1/10.
