Binondo | Timeline + Project Breakdown ๐๏ธโฌ๏ธ
Here's the timeline view for one of my favorite projects of the year, and one I had so much fun working on right from shoot all the way to the editing table. I really love the whole process of it so here's my excuse to nerd out and yap about all the finer details ๐ค I'll split this into two key points: visuals and then audio.
Visually, the goal was to make a postcard; that to us meant slow, mostly static shots. When Coleen and I were talking about our inspos and the visual style, these and finding balance in the composition were the main ideas. Now with the vibe of the world's oldest Chinatown, leaning into the nostalga through the colors and graphics was really important to me.
This was achieved through a film emulation as the foundation for my color grade, pushed towards the warm-green while being slightly faded. I then threw in a combination of the Edge Glow + Focus Blur FX (to name a few) to add halation and chromatic aberration respectively. All this helps with the aim of getting that dreamy, nostalgic vibe.
And then there's the audio - I went into it thinking of it as a good exercise in sound design. It's something I've been wanting to explore more and this felt like the best place to try it out.
I used the original audio from the day, which already did a lot to ground and support the visuals. In addition to the transition sound effects that give it more weight, tonal sounds played a massive role in helping convey the feelings from our postcard. These are the key-matched risers and impacts that add just that extra layer of atmosphere. Pair this with the mellow and calming music by Prebvo, and it caps off our warm afternoon in Binondo.
With all of that together, our video postcard is the result - a class finals requirement turned passion project. I really love this whole video, from the day itself spent with really awesome people all the way to how it turned out.
