Join us this Saturday at ARRAY CREATIVE CAMPUS for a special Mexican Mother’s Day celebration honoring our maternal villages. From aunts to grandmothers, sisters to chosen family—this day is for the women who nurture, uplift, and shape our lives. We’re screening powerful films rooted in the Chicana experience, including LA MISMA LUNA (Under the Same Moon), followed by a conversation between director Patricia Riggen (@patriciariggen ) and ARRAY founder Ava DuVernay (@ava ) Plus, a spotlight on Sylvia Morales’ groundbreaking work with CHICANA and A CRUSHING LOVE, centering the stories of Mexican and Mexican-American women across generations. In between screenings, enjoy taquitos y otras comidas from our neighbors @rodeomexgrill Bring your people to celebrate the ones who raised you at ARRAY 💐 #MOTHERSDAY #MOTHERHOOD #DIADELASMADRES

In the face of danger, eleven-year-old Joanne Bland marched alongside her fellow Civil Rights activists in 1960's Selma, Alabama. She was one of the youngest in the group led by Hosea Williams and John Lewis across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on what would become known as Bloody Sunday, a catalyst for the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Today, decades after what seemed to be definitive legislation, voter suppression efforts continue to be a barrier for those seeking to fairly elect their representatives; and the lessons taught in Selma are needed as much as they were in 1965. Earlier this year Joanne took her rest, but her life and legacy are a reminder that movements are built by ordinary people who refuse to give up.

“I am just here trying to register to vote.” — Annie Lee Cooper in SELMA (2017) This weekend, we’re watching SELMA. Just 60 years ago, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed to protect the right to vote, putting an end to barriers like the absurd literacy tests shown in this scene. But access to the ballot has never been a settled issue. And the lessons and strategies used by leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, Amelia Boynton and Hosea Williams resonate as much today as they did decades ago. In our free, online, SELMA Learning Companion, we break down how the right to cast a ballot is only as strong as the citizens who shape the laws. Check out our interactive lesson on gerrymandering with @ronclarkacademy at selma101.org/field-study Watch SELMA on @paramount #WeekendWatch #SelmaMovie
