SHARK BITING FIBRE OPTIC CABLE A few excerpts from a video I made during my final year at @arch_kuleuven . Thanks to @pieterjanginckels for always pushing me to make stuff and visit places and thanks to @captiveportals xÆTER for exhibiting the piece and making such an accurate description of my work: ‘A shark bites a Fiber-Optic cable somewhere in the ocean. It is recorded, uploaded to YouTube, and spread around the world through those very same cables. The memeable quality of this six-second long recording is undeniable, but it also reminds us of an important fact: the digital is rooted in the material - And all around the globe, complex infrastructures of cables, inaccessible to the public, covers the seabed and affects its natural surroundings. In Shark Biting Fiber-Optic Cable (2025) Aron Munk Rosing gives this short Youtube-clip its material form back, by printing out all 180 frames of the video, and placing them on a beach as one long rollfilm, an analogue animation. Through a transparent and low-tech process (as opposed to the opaque infrastructure of the internet), the digital recording of the physical cables and the fleshly shark is reembodied in the material world and brought back to the ocean - and, not without humor, into a shark aquarium. The whole process of translating digital images into a material form appears as a small gesture of rebellion - a way of grasping the complex infrastructures of the internet by making them tangible.’ A link to the full video will shortly be in my bio 🦈🦈🦈
