We’ve Forced a Consensus on the Gaza Genocide — On Senator Scott Wiener & the CA-11 Race
This week has shown that the political tides around Palestine are shifting rapidly and it is critical for our movement to continue our advance.
All three viable candidates in the CA-11 race to represent San Francisco in the U.S. House of Representatives have clearly recognized that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and understand how important Palestine will be in the midterm elections.
This now includes Senator Scott Wiener, a state legislator with one of the most pro-Israel track records in the state of California. Senator Wiener’s reversal represents how far the electorate has shifted on the issue of Palestine.
The CA-11 seat has been held by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, a staunchly pro-Israel Democrat, for nearly 40 years. As the race to replace her accelerates, we are sure of one thing: we are truly in a new era and Palestine will be a top issue for many at the ballot box in this and future election cycles.
The sea change in politics on Palestine is evident, and AROC Action is proud of the role we played in advancing this shift.
Senator Wiener’s statement comes after years of using his office to harm to the state’s Palestinian, Arab and Muslim communities.
This includes:
- Demonizing AROC and its leadership both publicly and privately for over a decade.
- Attempting to block Arabic language pathways in SF public schools.
- Attempting to influence Supervisors to vote against the San Francisco ceasefire resolution.
- Coordinating pressure campaigns to get people fired over pro-Palestine advocacy.
- Undermining the state’s Ethnic Studies program over inclusion of the history of Palestine.
- Most recently championing pro-Israel public education censorship bill AB 715.
Whatever motivates Senator Wiener’s recent pivot on Israel’s genocide in Gaza, it is nevertheless important to have as many U.S. elected officials as possible acknowledge the reality in Palestine for there to be change in policy.
Statement continues in the comments ⬇️
California should lead in protecting free speech, not censoring it. If it happens here it can happen in your state too.
AB 715 = Trump’s definition of “antisemitism” used to punish teachers who talk about Palestine.
Governor Newsom—prove you’re not using the MAGA playbook: VETO AB 715. Set the standard don’t let our education system get censored.

Hear from Nikki Fortunado Bas (@nikkiforallofus ), District 5 Supervisor from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, who attended last month’s Mass Meeting and honored the community’s commitment to stopping military cargo from departing from Oakland Airport. “I have been so moved by …. people who have come to me as an elected official,” Supervisor Bas said. “Calling for a ceasefire, calling for ethical investment, and now, for an arms embargo.”
As more elected officials speak up for an Oakland Arms Embargo, our demands become that much more of a reality. Join the growing movement at armsembargonow.com, where you can learn more and plug in (link in bio).

DEFEND PALESTINE IN EDUCATION: PHONE AND EMAIL ZAP!
We need to flood Assembly Speaker Rivas with calls and emails demanding that he allow AB 2159 to be heard.
This year we supported Assembly member Robert Garcia in introducing AB 2159, a bill that addresses the grave issues of censorship of Palestine in AB 715, and creates safeguards to protect students and educators.
However, Assembly Speaker Rivas is not allowing AB 2159 to be heard in committee. He is holding it back, and this is unacceptable.
------------
Call Rivas's Office: (916) 319-2029
"I’m calling to urge Assembly Speaker Rivas to assign AB 2159 to committee. This bill is crucial in addressing the serious problems with AB 715, and deserves to have a hearing."

San Francisco showed up and showed out for May Day!
As our people locally and globally face the brutal impacts of the billionaire class’ increased repression, militarism, and fascist agendas, we will continue to stand together and fight until we see liberation and justice for us all.
“We’ve watched our government support genocide against the Palestinian people using our tax dollars. We demand an Oakland People’s Arms Embargo Now!”
AROC Member Leader, Islam, uplifting international solidarity and the demand for an Oakland People's Arms Embargo at the @oaklandsinfronteras May Day rally and March!
On May Day, we honor the power, dignity, and solidarity of workers everywhere and today, that spirit showed up in action.
Oakland People Arms Embargo organizers took collective action at the Oakland airport, bringing the message directly to a global crossroads: workers deserve justice, and our labor should never be complicit in genocide. End all shipments of military cargo from the Port of Oakland to Israel and demand an Oakland Arms Embargo on Israel.
We carry with us the imagery of our Arms Embargo mural from Clarion Alley, created in collaboration with Art Forces, a visual reminder that art and activism move together. What lives on a wall in our community can and must travel into the spaces where decisions are made and systems are upheld.
May Day is not just about recognition. It’s about action. And today, our community showed what that looks like.
