Motherhood is so wild.
During pregnancy, I felt beautiful, even on the days when it was a serious struggle. And then Efren was born, and for a long time, I barely recognized myself.
My long, full curls — the hair I had always loved — became thin, limp, stringy, barely-wavy hair. I went from one of the most active seasons of my life to struggling to find even a few minutes for myself. I felt like my brain didn’t work the same way anymore, lI couldn’t hold onto thoughts the way I used to. We barely slept those first few months. I felt so far from myself, so un-beautiful. Like I had lost my spark.
But then there was him.
Our beautiful boy. His little laugh, his perfect smile, the way I could get completely lost in his face and somehow find my way back to myself. Every time I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the woman staring back, I could look at him and see little glimpses of me. And somehow, that was enough to ground me. Enough to remind me that I wasn’t gone — I was becoming.
Over time, I’ve come to understand that childbirth is also a kind of rebirth for mothers. Our consciousness shifts, our capacity for love expands, we are broken open in ways we never expected, and then slowly, we begin rebuilding ourselves into someone new.
Thankfully, I’m finding my spark again. And so much of that is because of this little family I get to love and be loved by. I’m so grateful for the profound lessons our son teaches me every day without even trying. So grateful for an amazing husband who has been my anchor through all of it.
To experience motherhood with these two has been the deepest joy of my life.
That’s the wildest part of all — even when motherhood takes pieces of you, it also gives you back a version of yourself you never would have found any other way.
