Today marks a year since my dad passed away. I’ve always read that the loss of someone close to you leaves a large hole, but I haven’t really found that to be the case. The grief I feel for my dad manifests as a patchwork of small, seemingly mundane moments. A gifted tool I was sure I’d never use. An old voicemail with no explicit purpose. An eye rolling tidbit of wisdom that now seems so practical. The warmth I feel from my kids as they relive memories of their grandfather.
This picture was taken on our first ever backpacking trip. As a self absorbed sixteen year old, it was an inconvenient blip. As a forty one year old, I see the origin story of a love of the outdoors. A love that was quietly planted by a father who cherished watching it grow to his grandkids. I’m reminded often of the impact my dad had on my life. His absence doesn’t create a hole. His life helps fill in the cracks.
