Norm Clasen is one of the most iconic photographers in American history. Full stop.
His subject - the mustached Marlboro Man (who was a real guy by the way) - is likely the most widely viewed human face in history.
Norm’s work was representative of just one small slice of the American West, but still–our idea of the cowboy today is inseparable from the images Norm shot, because his job was to build that mythology from scratch. And he was really damn good at it.
His photographs are a masterclass in light, composition and texture. But what brought Norm back to Arlyn Studios with us for a second time was something a lot bigger than craft. His work was a key piece of the foundation for every conversation we had about worldbuilding, about the American West, and about who gets to decide what this country’s myths look like.
When we step into the West today, we step in large part into Norm’s world.
Recorded live in Austin for Americana First at SXSW.
