In 1961, psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a now-infamous experiment at Yale University to test how far people would go in obeying authority, even when asked to inflict harm. In 1986, Peter Gabriel translated that chilling truth into the haunting track We Do What We’re Told (Milgram’s 37) on his album So. Nearly four decades later, I reimagined it as an AI-generated music video—where obedience and technology converge in unsettling ways, emphasizing the fact that we are constantly being told what to do: stop, walk, enjoy, buy, follow, like, join, play. These are all in fact commands, which we willingly obey, with no sense or care for where it is leading us - evident if we just pick our heads up away from the screens and look around us.

One body in motion, then another, the simple joy of moving together. A pack forms. The pack becomes a crowd. The crowd becomes a stampede. Somewhere in there, without anyone deciding, play turns into competition and competition turns into something older and worse. Bodies collide. Bodies fall. The oldest story we have plays out again: one figure standing over another, the ground beneath them the same ground we've been fighting on since the beginning. Someone wins. But what?
