Machining OP1 of the TITAN-511LM from @titansofcnc on our 5-axis @gfmachiningsolutions Mill E 500 U. Direct drive torque motors on the B and C are great for lots of turn milling, though this should really be done on a mill-turn machine! Programmed in Fusion.

We achieved some awesome surface finishes on this Telecoms industry part this week! 3.5-degree tapers on almost every surface and since we didn't have any tapered tooling or specialty profile surfacing endmills on hand it meant a 1/4" ball endmill had to pick up the slack with an almost 9-hour cycle time in total. The last photo shows all the surfacing toolpaths in Fusion 360.
3 extra 3D models with altered geometries as well as containment sketches were used to make the toolpaths behave as wanted.
This was just for a single prototype as this would be die-cast in full production. I'll take reliability and saved programming time over cycle time any day with one-offs.

Our latest overly tedious shop upgrade…
800ft of various aluminum bars cleaned, barcoded, sorted and stored on our new cantilever rack! This cleared up 60 sq-ft of shop floor and allows us to easily track our inventory digitally. By having so much material on hand and knowing exactly the grade, dimensions, cost per inch, material certs, and remaining length of each bar, it is now easier to quote and complete jobs faster.
We chose Sortly for inventory management. Not quite a full ERP but if we go down that path later it’ll be an easier transition. Here’s how it works: Each bar has a unique QR code that contains all of its information. After band-sawing a bar, we simply scan its QR code, update its remaining length, and return the bar to the rack.
To support this, we bought 2 thermal printers: one for 1x2” material barcodes and another for 4x6” shipping labels. These Munbyn products have been working pretty well so far and are cheaper than Dymo.

Roughing pattern leftover from @adskfusion360 3D Morphed Spiral tool path. Technically not the best for this application due to the variance in steep to shallow inclines and only having a horizontal stepover option, but it sure did look cool!

Kaeser compressor air filter: $259, furnace pre-filter: $8. Maritool sells the Velum filter roll system which is especially great if you need to replace them every week, but with it only this being this dirty after a years time this system is working for us.

316SS milled this weekend on the VF2SS. 100% machine deburred with a 2+hour cycle time. Sandvik 390 inserts were pretty chipped after roughing! 1/4” Helical endmill with the T-Plus coating for all finishing which left this beautiful sheen.
