As his feast day falls on the week of 𝐚𝐥𝐭_𝙩𝙖𝙗's opening, this channelled ritual-performance is a tribute to the life and mysticism of St Francis of Assisi: the Catholic patron saint of ecology. The performers ritually open and close the space, with the principal performer lending her voice to a representative of nature: a tree.
We see echoes of animism in this saint’s approach to theology and mysticism; he called the Sun his brother and the Moon his sister, while he tamed wild animals and spoke to birds. Through his life, we see that worship and communion with the Divine do not need the confines of a building, nor do they need the authority of a priest, pastor, or institution. This performance - titled after St Francis's "Canticle of The Sun" - is inspired by the saint’s kinship with nature, and jovial exaltation and defence of all of creation.
