What makes our solar simulator shine are its custom #LED light chips. These tiny, but powerful components are the result of a fruitful collaboration between our chair and Seoul Semiconductor, Future Electronics and RENA Electronica. For their technology and design, the LED chips and light source were nominated at the Light + Building #Awards 2024 / #Architeller. If you are in Frankfurt, don’t miss the final presentation on March 5th, 17h at the Messe Frankfurt GmbH #ZCBS #lab #buildingsystems #ethzurich #solarsimulator #technology #sustainability

In this semester's studio "Design for Climate – Earth & Sun", we will investigate earthen and bio-based materials and the sun as a provider of abundant energy for creating place and space. Our aim is to apply a comprehensive methodology for the integrated design of a mixed-use building in the Valle di Blenio, Ticino, that combines low-carbon principles with architectural design quality. The students will gain a thorough understanding of the essential parameters and metrics related to energy, emissions, and comfort in building design. This experimental studio will be carried out by our chair, Prof. Arno Schlueter, with Prof. Roger Boltshauser, Prof. Momoyo Kaijima, together with the client and architect of the project, as well as experts on earth construction and solar energy. For our first session today, we were joined by Benjamin Nott, collaborator on the Innosuisse #flagship project "Think Earth". #thinkearth #ethzurich #teaching #buildingsystems #climatedesign #sustainability #designforclimate

The sun is shining! 🌞 We are delighted to announce that the Zero Carbon Building Systems #ZCBS lab's LED artificial sun is shining and moving! The artificial sun is made up of hundreds of powerful light-emitting diodes and is housed in an artificial atmosphere chamber. A wide range of desired conditions can be created in terms of solar radiation, temperature and humidity. A test cell can be used to test new building envelopes, materials and building services components for #heating, #ventilation, #lighting, #humidification and dehumidification in different climates around the world. Watch the video and let us know what you think! Additional information about the lab can be found on our website. We would like to thank our team and partners for making the #ZCBS lab possible: @ethzurich Team: Prof. Dr. Arno Schlueter, Director; Dr. Illias Hischier, Research Lead; Marco Baur, LED Solar Simulator Lead, Facility Project Manager Phase 2; Gabriel Kreuzer, Systems Integration; Erik Jan De Best, Systems Integration; Dominique Maritz, Systems Integration; Moritz Begle, Facility Project Manager Phase 1 Industry Partners: Siemens, WOLF-Heizung-Klimatechnik GmbH, SageGlass - Saint-Gobain Funding Support: ETH Foundation, SNSF Swiss National Science Foundation Constructions Partners: Aepli Metallbau AG, Alltech, Bertschinger Innenausbau AG, Brönnimann Hoch- & Tiefbau AG, Burckhardt Partner GmbH, Dr. Lüchinger+Meyer Bauingenieure AG, Eglin Elektro AG, Frei+Partner Haustechnikplanung AG, Future Electronics, GIFAS-ELECTRIC Switzerland, Hälg & Co. We are very proud of our installation at the FCL Global conference! The two LED-light domes visualize time-resolved data (dynamic grid emissions, building energy demand, solar irradiation, air temperature) throughout the year in Zurich and Singapore, while the AR application illustrates EV mobility flow, ZEV local PV energy trading, and building energy demand. In our research in the Powering the City" (POW) module, we find architectural, technical, infrastructural, and socioeconomic solutions to a large-scale urban decarbonization by increasing solar energy production on buildings. For those who couldn't make it to the conference at the ETH Zurich Main Building last week, the exhibition is still open to the public at Campus Hönggerberg until May 2024! Big thanks to the whole team from Zurich, Singapore, Gothenburg and New York: Justin McCarty, Ayca Duran, Maximilian Gester, Alina Galimshina, Jidong Kang, Jiazu Zhou, Seanglidet Yean, Shin Woei Leow, Roger Boltshauser, Tien Foo Sing, Yuming Fu, Francis Bu-Sung Lee, Markus Schläpfer, Alexander Hollberg, Alessandra Gabaglio, Christoph Waibel, Arno Schlueter and the Master in Integrated Building Systems, ETH Zürich's students Rino Sogno and Chen Chiu who have developed the LED-light domes and AR applications as part of their semester projects.

With more than 10 paper presentations and one Best Paper Award, we can definitely say that #CISBAT 2023 was a success! Congratulations to all the contributors and our team, especially to Justin McCarty, Dr. Christoph Waibel, Dr. Alina Galimshina, Prof. Dr. Alexander Hollberg and Prof. Dr. Arno Schlueter who have won the Best Paper Award with: “Do we need a saw? Carbon-based analysis of facade BIPV performance under partial shading from nearby trees.” The paper explores the impact of shading from trees on BIPV #performance and the potential conflict between the carbon sequestration benefits of trees and the carbon mitigation benefits of #BIPV. The results indicate that the removal of trees has a negative influence on the carbon balance of the building when considering #LCA. Other features of the model space such as the grid carbon intensity or the configuration of the BIPV array carry more significance for #energy production and lifecycle carbon emissions. #sustainability #carbonemissions #architecture

What is driving the deployment of photovoltaic #PV and building-integrated photovoltaics #BIPV, and how does this contribute to the necessary energy transition? These are some of the questions that our research module "Powering the City" (POW) will discuss as part of the Future Cities Laboratory Global #FCL Conference on October 12th and 13th, 2023. #POW will also be part of a public exhibition at the ETH Zürich Zentrum campus. We look forward to sharing our findings with you and having critical discussions about PV and a sustainable built environment. Stay tuned! You are still on time to register for the #FCL conference.
