Miguel Adrover moved to London in the 1980s and became part of the creative circles around Leigh Bowery and Alexander McQueen. When he opened Horn on East 9th Street, the shop was also his home. It became a place for radical exchange, where designers like McQueen, Sebastian Pons, and the AsFour collective gathered and sold unique showpieces. From the beginning, Miguel took a different approach, inspiring the creatives who shaped modern fashion. His story needs to be told. We are excited to host the Canadian premiere of The Designer is Dead, the story of Miguel Adrover. Date: May 22, 2026 Location: The Royal Theatre, Toronto Tickets: Link in bio. #MiguelAdrover #alexandermcqueen #TheDesignerIsDead #archivefashion #BlogTO

Miguel Adrover and Lee McQueen both had a restless energy. In London, they moved in the same circles, and that connection stayed with Miguel when he moved to New York. When Miguel opened Horn on East 9th Street, it became a place to experiment. McQueen would bring over bags of studio scraps, the leftover pieces from his own work, and Miguel would turn them into something new in the back of the shop where he lived. This resourcefulness was more than just a way to save money; it was a way to push back against the polished, corporate fashion of the ‘90s. He used those cast-offs and street finds to create a new style of deconstruction. That raw, scrappy approach inspired the designers and collectors who shape the industry today. We are excited to host the Canadian premiere of The Designer is Dead, the story of Miguel Adrover. Miguel Adrover’s Fall 2000 runway show was set against a background of steaming manhole covers, screeching cars and pouring rain recorded on the Williamsburg Bridge.    Adrover repurposed various materials, including vintage clothing, designer pieces and fabrics to reflect New York street life. Invites were sent out on stamped dollar bills. He explained: “The streets of New York were a big inspiration; you could be an upper-class lady from Park Avenue or homeless person from Chinatown.”    Logos served as symbols of capitalism, and how heavily consumers relied on familiar brand imagery for meaning and value. The garments also contrasted tailored dresses with asymmetrical, unfinished hems, and functional everyday pieces with delicate statement pieces.    Today, collaborations between brands and refashioned logos are everywhere; however, Adrover noted his use at the time led to a different response. The iconic Burberry mac, turned inside out and reconstructed as a plaid dress, led to a threatened lawsuit from the luxury house itself. They asked Adrover to never use their plaid patterning again.    Miguel Adrover’s legacy lives on with ‘The Designer is Dead’ with rare archival footage and never before seen runway videos.     Tickets available now to Toronto premiere  Friday, May 22, 2026 at 7:00 PM  The Royal, 608 College St, Toronto, ON M6G 1B4  Tickets via the link in bio!  #MiguelAdrover #ArchiveFashion #TorontoEvents #FashionHistory #TheDesignerIsDead

Archival Toronto is proud to present the Toronto premiere of the documentary “The Designer is Dead.” Directed by Gonzalo Hergueta, this film is a haunting and visceral look at one of fashion’s most polarizing and brilliant provocateurs: Miguel Adrover. Hailed by Anna Wintour and The New York Times in the early 2000s as the saviour of American fashion, Adrover famously upended the industry with a raw commitment to multiculturalism and sustainability long before they were buzzwords. This documentary follows his meteoric rise, his sudden “erasure” from the fashion calendar, and his current life of creative isolation in Mallorca. The Designer is Dead: The Miguel Adrover Story The Toronto Premiere Friday, May 22, 2026 at 7:00 PM The Royal, 608 College St, Toronto, ON M6G 1B4 Tickets available now via Eventbrite #blogto #migueladrover #archivalfashion #torontoevents #fashion

On March 27, Join us as we celebrate the opening of our first permanent storefront ‘The Showroom’    We wanted to create a space that feels welcoming and exciting, a place where people who love fashion can connect, discover, and find new pieces they’ll adore. The Showroom is our first permanent retail spot. Since 2017, we’ve only done pop-up shops, but as we start hosting more diverse events that bring people together around shared passions, we wanted to stay true to our roots.    The Showroom will be a place for us to showcase a rotating selection of highly curated stock from designers we love, as well as a place to (occasionally) share our permanent archive and library for those who are curious and love fashion as much as we do!    We hope you can join us in celebrating the opening of our new space. To mark this event, we’re offering a 10% discount on everything for all attendees, we’ll provide refreshments and just generally a good time. Please note that slots are limited, so RSVP as soon as you can. We’ll start taking appointments immediately after the event. Link in bio.
