Lighting a Legend
As one of the world’s most recognisable historic ships, the Cutty Sark is a true maritime icon.
So, it was a great privilege for Architainment to support a sensitive lighting upgrade in spring 2026. Working closely with @dhadesigns and @sielectricalltd , the focus wasn’t on reinvention, but enhancement — improving visual impact while respecting the ship’s heritage and the realities of a busy, working museum.
By upgrading existing infrastructure, the project built on a trusted foundation that minimised disruption while delivering greater performance and flexibility.
What changed?
- Warm, discreet linear lighting on deck gently reveals the ship’s form
- Colour‑changing lighting below deck adds flexibility for exhibitions and storytelling
- External upgrades reuse existing fittings for high‑quality illumination with minimal impact
All the lighting integrates seamlessly with the existing Pharos control system, ensuring intuitive day‑to‑day operation.
Live from April 2026, the refreshed lighting enhances Cutty Sark’s presence day and night to deliver an enriched visitor experience while supporting long‑term sustainability.

Trafalgar Square after dark
London’s iconic fountains have been reimagined with a new illumination system that brings colour, movement, and energy to this historic public space.
Designed to perform underwater and controlled seamlessly via the cloud, the result is a dynamic display that looks simple—but is anything but.

Before installation, the lighting concept was tested and refined — exploring colour, rhythm, and how light could echo the movement of the tide.

Check out this stunning video of the new Architainment lighting installation in the Subway Road tunnel, Barry, which was taken by Simon Fenoulhet, the artist and designer who created the wavelike effects you can see in the clip.
Architainment supplied the @martinprofessional Exterior Linear Pro Graze QUAD lights and @pharos_controls controllers used to create the dramatic lighting. Installation was performed by Development Plus and the project officially went live in September 2025.
The project was commissioned by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and local housing developers via the Section 106 sustainable transport fund.
Feeling the heat? So are many electronics! While most of our enclosures are designed to stay cool on their own, this specific build features a built-in fan (top right) and vent (bottom left) to keep everything running smoothly, even in this heatwave.
