A compelling example of urban densification, showcasing how architecture can transcend historical, social and geographical boundaries.
The former Südtiroler-Siedlung in Innsbruck, a housing project hastily built during 2nd world to accommodate South Tyrolean families who had chosen Tirol as their homeland, has now undergone a transformation process to meet needs and standards of contemporary housing.
The design competition initiated by NHT (Neue Heimat Tirol) led to a comprehensive urban redevelopment for the Pradl Ost district. The winning entry from obermoser + partner architekten focuses on providing affordable housing while integrating social, ecological and design principles into a cohesive urban plan.
The design displays functional and typological versatility and foresees a long-term utilisation span. Open spaces are a key design feature, introducing a creative gradient of public, semi-public and private spaces to encourage social connectivity while keeping true to the original purpose of the settlement.
Architecture becomes a prime examples of affordable living typologies, meeting high-quality living standards, fostering inclusion and sustainable growth.

Klimahouse Congress in Bolzano (IT), focused this year on the key challenges of the construction sector, in the context of energy crisis, European climate goals, and the urgent need to create affordable yet high-quality living spaces for all.
More than 400 exhibitors showcased innovations and solutions.
Major focus of the event were the critical issues in contemporary architecture and urban planning.
Notable speakers, including Dipl. Ing. Markus Pollo (Neue Heimat Tirol) and Arch. Alexander Gastager (obermoser + partner architekten), held a lecture on the subject “affordable Housing in Tyrol”.
The Südtiroler Siedlung Innsbruck – Pradl Ost was shown as an example of practice, on how resource-efficient construction methods, energy-efficient building concepts and innovative reuse strategies can meet the growing demand for affordable housing.

The project envisions a feasible and impactful design that respectfully engages with the existing structure of the Fleckalmbahn mountain station. Our proposal emphasizes the valuable reuse of the existing structure, incorporating it into a contemporary narrative.
Key priorities:
- Landmark creation, design of a distinctive and memorable architectural statement
- Seamless embedment of the built structure in the surrounding alpine landscape
- Visual connections refer to the architectural legacy of Alfons Walde.
