Somehow, people have come to think of therapy as a Western invention. We’re kicking off *Knowledge on the Rocks* for 2026 with @araba.oa here to correct the record. *Your Ancestors Went to Therapy (and you should too)* traces how African tradition quietly shaped the psychology the West now charges you dollars per hour for, and how to bring that wisdom back into everyday life. There’s also a drumming meditation on the programme. Tickets at the door Your ancestors would want you to come.

Lessons from my 30 something years in this incarnation ✨ ✨ Age is just a number - “I should achieve this by this age or I’m a failure” is a lie. I published my first book, started my DJ career, found love, had a baby all in my 30s. And as my 40s approach, life is only getting better! ✨ But also age isn’t just a number - sometimes, age is actually very important and we should act accordingly. Just because you look young, doesn’t mean you don’t need that health check up. Let’s not use ‘age is just a number’ to justify foolishness. ✨ Spirituality and wellness are not things you do, they’re how you live - even if I never do another ritual, yoga class or meditation again, I’ll remain protected, blessed and highly favoured. Divine connection and mental wellness flow from how you treat yourself, how you treat others, how you interact with nature and her cycles, how you use your gifts. ✨ It doesn’t matter what other people think - sometimes we worry about being fully ourselves because of what others might think. But what they think actually doesn’t matter because whatever you do, someone will have a problem. As long as it’s safe to do so, being wholly and radically authentic is the only way to receive all the blessings that are meant for YOU Read more on my Substack 🤓 Snaps from the year so far and I gotta say, it’s shaping up to be a pretty great one ✌🏾

Lagos Take 1: My first time in 🇳🇬 I went to speak at a mental health conference and teach a yoga class @theyogaspot.ng ✨ Lagos Take 2: I was just passing through on my way to a village near Iseyin, where I spent a month at a residency with two other writers. I also got to spend some time with local healers and deliver a confidence building session at a school. This is where I finished the first draft of my manuscript for Return to Source ✨ Lagos Take 3: I’m returning to Lagos to DJ, connect with fellow creative community builders and see Black Coffee ✨ It’s like each time I go to 9ja I’m playing a different character 😂 I think I’ll call this character ‘Disco Dionne’ 🪩 Who else is in Lagos this weekend? Let’s dance! 💃🏾🕺🏾

When I say I’m trying to live as a Future Ancestor, this is what I mean 🌱 Ancestors aren’t just people in history books or with their names on street signs and buildings. They’re the ones who perfected a family recipe, passed down through generations. They’re the ones who plucked up the courage to break a generational curse. They’re the ones who made their extended family feel so loved that everyone wanted to name their children after them. Being a Future Ancestor isn’t about trying to change the world. But rather recognising that, by living with intention and alignment, you already are. For me, this chapter looks like investing in my family life, recalibrating in my role as healer and teacher, and finding space for joy in the chaos. How about you? #FutureAncestor #AfricanPhilosophy #AfricanTradition #HonourYourAncestors
