Red Oaks, Scarlet Oaks, Swamp White Oaks- Oh My! A huge shout out to JJ, Ryan and Justice on our Stewardship team for planting 22 new trees along our driveway and in our farmhouse lawn. These trees will provide the canopies that our grandchildren, great grandchildren and their great grandchildren will sit under as they take solace in this special place, protected by the Trustees for everyone, forever. We are lucky to have such a dedicated team of Stewards who are looking after all of those generations to come. 💕

The thrill of hearing an owl call in the still of early twilight is one of my favorite parts about having access to this beautiful land at Appleton Farms. We want to share and expand upon that feeling by offering an up close and personal experience with these majestic creatures. Join us for a special event with Marcia and Mark Wilson from Eyes on Owls, to meet 6 live owls up close and personal! By sharing photos, stories, and live owl demonstrations, the Wilsons highlight our local owls’ unique adaptations, habitats and behaviors in the wild, while sharing tips on how you can look and listen for owls yourself. And everyone gets to practice the owls’ calls during the hooting lessons! Session One at 2pm will be geared towards families with young children (6 and under) Session Two at 4pm is geared towards all ages. Both are appropriate for children/families. Pre-registration is required. Sign up in the link in our bio!

Happy Earth Day! Today we are grateful for the beautiful land that was left in our care from the Appleton family. And we are also grateful to the Appalachian Mountain Club and MathWorks for helping us steward our trails and volunteering their time today to help fill and re-grade a notoriously muddy portion of the Grass Rides. Maintaining over 12 miles of trails is no small feat, and it truly takes a village. @appalachianmountainclub

Appleton has a rich history of production farming- including beef cattle, dairy production and even Turkeys for a while in the 1940's! Today our cattle production is centered around our Farm Store and our Meat CSAs. Having cattle at Appleton enables us not only to continue our rich history, but also to maintain almost 400 acres of grasslands. With our herd, we focus on healthy land management, rotational grazing and soil health. Our livestock team partners with our Agroecology department for long term planning for our pastures. We take into consideration things like soil health, grassland bird habitat, pollinator species and experiment with different land management techniques, all in thanks to our efficient grazers. 🐮 By becoming a member of our Meat CSA, you directly support this work and enable this history to continue on for future generations, and of course, you get an abundance of delicious healthy food in return. To become a member of our CSA and to read more about our grazing plan, check out the link in our bio!

New beginnings are in the air everywhere at the farm this week. The cows are headed back out to green and dewy pastures where they will soon birth their young, the sun is gracing us with its presence longer, the seedings are erupting from the fertile soil to become the crops that nourish our community, and all the creatures who inhabit these 1,000 acres are waking up for Spring. How do we celebrate this time of year at the farm? By simply taking a moment to breathe it all in. Hike our trails and notice the changing world around you Grab a picnic from the farm store with a view of the crop fields (don't forget the sourdough!) Sign up for Adult or Family Cow Connections to engage more deeply with our animals Join us on Saturdays in May for free Learning with Livestock presentations Choose your own adventure!

We know so many of you have bought and loved our Appleton Farms honey, so we decided to give you a sneak peek behind its creation! John is our resident beekeeper, and long-time volunteer who makes this magical stuff. He keeps hives on 4 different areas of our property, and just stocked them with bees this week to get ready for the season. He produces around 500lbs per year, which helps keep not only our shelves stocked, but these bees work alongside our native pollinators to keep our fields pollinated! Keep an eye out for these boxes if you are hiking the Plains loop or the Farmstead loop.

The Trustees is seeking local birders and naturalists to help survey grassland habitat to document grassland bird populations. At our Trustees Farms, we manage our grasslands both for suitable nesting sites as well as production agriculture- which isn't possible without close monitoring of these important species to balance these priorities! As grasslands across the Northeast continue to disappear, we are seeking enthusiastic individuals to help us with this important work. Sites include: Appleton Farms, Old Town Hill, Hamlin, Greenwood Farm, and Ward Reservation ✅Love being outdoors and hiking through grasslands ✅Have a basic knowledge of grassland bird identification, or a willingness to learn ✅Can commit once per month May-July Does this sound like you? Sign up to volunteer and help protect these species while preserving local agriculture. Visit the link in our bio. Photo Credit: Mark Davis
