America: Drawls

History: “The heavily Anglo region of Mexico abutting Louisiana and Arkansas revolted in 1836 and was a nominally independent nation until 1846. The Texians, as the Republic’s citizens were known, saw independence as a temporary condition, armed revolt a way of making Texas a part of the United States.
Foreshadowing a later secession, the preservation of slavery was high on the list of the Texians’ concerns. A Treaty of Annexation was signed between the Republic of Texas and the United States on April 12, 1844. Mexico severed diplomatic relations with the United States in protest within days. A joint resolution of Congress endorsed annexation on March 1, 1845, and Texas was admitted into the United States as a slave state on December 29, 1845. War between the United States and Mexico broke out on April 25, 1846.”
Mexico lost the Mexican-American War and had to give up 55% of its territories. In the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which ended the war, the US was to give citizenship and land rights to all current residents of the land they had acquired. All efforts to claim these rights were denied. Nine days before the treaty was signed, guess what was found on that land? Gold.
It is easy to forget we’ve been on the same side when the war machine is also in charge of the text books.
AND STILL…You can redraw a border but you can’t eradicate presence. You can take away rights to the land but you can’t take a spirit’s connection to it. The land remembers and the people will, too.

Skip Steps 2, 3, and 4.
3) Write “Exempt” in the space below Step 4(c).
Complete Step 5 by signing and dating the form.
4) Submit the completed form to your employer’s payroll department.
IMPORTANT: Use the IRS Withholding Estimator to calculate how much WOULD have been deducted for the year and donate some of that money to a grassroots nonprofit organizations in order to receive tax-deduction benefits.
