I’m a grad Dad now! Got to thinking about how the grad portrait experience differs from shopping for a prom dress.

The most casual of hangs for a quick headshot that’s not so corporate. (It’s fun to hear my kids see this and say ‘hey, that’s Coach Stef from the gym!’) 💪

🐔 Chicken Backyard Ultra 🐔 https://strava.app.link/AWae7XUjc2b What started as a simple idea has grown into something way bigger than just a run. The Chicken Backyard Ultra is a grassroots, community-driven event built to bring people together — to challenge themselves, support one another, and experience the unique grind (and fun) of a backyard ultra This isn’t about prize money or big stages — it’s about showing up, pushing your limits, and sharing miles with an incredible group of humans. Whether you're here to train, compete, or just see what you’re capable of, this space is for you. Huge thank you to our amazing sponsors for supporting this vision and helping make it all happen: 🙏 Applehead Studio 🙏 3 Mile Outfitters Your support means we can keep this event accessible, inclusive, and 100% community-focused. Let’s keep building something special together. What’s one more? 💪

The dark of the studio. The ‘Steph’s Not Here Today’ tour. I don’t want to be the studio that only shows you the fancy schmancy stuff all the time. We’ve all got cables and cases and boxes and shit we don’t need, didn’t need or can’t part with. This is where I hide it.

We had a group in today for a shoot that called for a total studio flip and when you do something the same way day in and day out and then flip it, it melts the brain. We did see the studio with fresh eyes so we’re going to keep it this way, find a new flow and see how it goes. It opens up a lot more options for environmental portraits, a variety of different style headshots but still holds a place for our corporate and grad portraits.

90% of my days in the studio are spent shooting corporate headshots and grad portraits. Most of these clients are here because they were told to come here by a company, boss, marketing manager, a Mom or grandmother…or they realize their current headshot is 6-8 years and they finally need a new one. But lately, we’ve been shooting a lot more actors and models which is a very different shoot. A little longer with wardrobe changes, set changes, lighting changes and more often than not, they’re excited to be here. So, if you NEED to be here, we can have you in and out in no time. If you WANT to be here, I’ve got all the time in the world for you! Models or money managers, we’re happy to see you all.

I heard a rumour that there are some iron rings being handed out soon! Congratulations to our fellow Cape Bretoner, Annie on her engineering degree from Dal! If you’re looking for alternatives to grad photos being taken at school, we’re here in studio 3 days a week, all year round! Live viewing of your proofs while we shoot, lots and lots of pose options and packages, good music and a relaxed environment.

It’s ’grad portrait season’ these days, but it’s always headshot season (except July and August, nobody really wants headshots in the summer). While the white background is by far the most popular option for most of our corporate headshot work, there’s always options!

Grab your chicken, grab your partner, grab your buds or your oversized larynx and get in here for grad portraits! You don’t get your haircut at school so why are you having your grad portraits taken at school. These are going to hang in the wall for decades…you should at least enjoy the process, have a little fun and be involved in the process of making the photos that will hang on your families fridge, wall and mantle for the next 20 years.
