What do you experience in the game? Artists Tony NG Kwun Lun and OU Tingzhu each created a chessboard and chess pieces, which they combined in the installation titled Ontology. This work showcases their symbiosis and harmony in a collaborative chess game. 🏙Tony NG created a black-and-white chessboard from handmade paper. The dark squares are traces of permeating ink, while the white squares reveal the paper's natural colour and texture. The chess pieces were crafted from everyday objects collected by the artist whilst exploring the city: cement blocks and glass pieces, for example. On the base of each piece, he recorded the latitude and longitude coordinates of its collection site, presenting a microcosm of a fluid metropolis. 🎋 OU Tingzhu employed wooden panels as a base, layering ramie and fine cotton gauze on top. After repeated scraping and polishing, he applied raw lacquer to achieve a warm, tactile texture. The chessboard reveals subtle tonal variations between the coarse ramie and delicate cotton layers. The pieces, formed from dry lacquer in bamboo-joint shapes, serve as both floral vessels and utilitarian objects, fostering an ongoing dialogue between objects, daily life and nature.
