I have been waiting for my jersey to come in to make this teeny announcement. I was fortunate enough to make the Men’s Roller Derby World Cup Team for API Fury! Excited is an understatement. I am so honored to represent a collective of Asian and Pacific Islanders and showcase our culture and heritage. And I can’t wait to give it all we’ve got in France! This hits differently though. I’ve decided to skate under my husband’s derby name, Last Rites, instead of my own. Quite frankly, I feel like he could have had a decent shot at making it to the cup on his own accord. But reality rarely lines up with your plans. As many of you know, Jeff was diagnosed with Stage 2 Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in October. With that news he hung up his skates, a retirement he wasn’t quite ready for. So I wanted to honor my strong and brave husband and make sure Last Rites made it to the World Cup. Even though he wasn’t ready, the moment I heard his news, I was. After the cup I am retiring. I have accomplished what I set out to achieve in Roller Derby. I’ve played for some of the best teams, I’ve made lasting friendships, and I met my husband through this wonderful sport. But for me, it’s time. The kiddos are getting older and are going to start their adventures and I am perfectly happy living vicariously through them and their endeavors. I look forward to it. And I look forward to our next adventure whatever that may be. But I am ready to close this chapter. Jeff, I love you so damn much. You have handled your diagnosis with such a calm and level head even as I was losing my mind. I was supposed to be your support and it felt like there were times you were mine. I am so excited of the advancement of medicine that you have a really good prognosis as of now. I know whatever comes our way we are in this together, partners in crime, in this life and the next. But keep kicking cancers butt okay? Thanks. Short story long, thank you Roller Derby. You gave me my family and I will forever be grateful. I look forward to giving it my all, one final time, on one of the greatest stages. Thank you all for being a part of our lives and letting us be a part of yours. Farewell tour!
