An excerpt from my recent conversation with Elisavet Rodopoulou of
@tsakonika__ifanta , a 3rd-generation weaver from Penolpoesse, Greece.
AOW: What do you wish more people to know about you and your mother’s beautiful work?
“For many years, tradition was something that people unfortunately dismissed. It was often seen as outdated, even discouraging, for someone to engage with it. There is still a common misunderstanding that ‘traditional’ means something irrelevant or belonging only to the past.
What I truly wish people understood about our workshop is that we chose to continue this path with patience and persistence, carrying traditional techniques into the present. For us, tradition is what connects us to the past and at the same time guides us into the future. We do not forget what was passed down to us by our grandmothers. We carry this knowledge forward and transmit it to the next generations with a fresh perspective, while remaining faithful to the authenticity of the techniques.
This path has never been easy. But it is not impossible. Creation, in itself, is a powerful force — it requires commitment, but it also gives meaning. And for us, this is exactly what keeps this work alive.”— Elisavet Rodopoulou, 3rd generation weaver from Penolpoesse, Greece.
In my latest interview, Elisavet shares her full story as the sole family continuing to preserve traditional Tsakonian textiles in mainland Greece. During our conversation, we dive into how she juggles running this as a business, what drives her, along with challenges - she shares so much with us. Hope you enjoy.
