NEWS: The U.S. Department of Education released a final rule that continues to exclude occupational therapy from the definition of a professional degree. This means that future students in occupational therapyâamong many other professionsâwill be subject to a drastically lower federal loan limit of $20,500 per year. As we analyze the rule, AOTA will keep you informed on how you can take action through our legislative action center. Stay tuned for more.

Each year, the Slagle Lectureship Award honors a member of AOTA who has contributed to the development of the professionâs body of knowledge. This year, Trudy Mallinson, PhD, OTR/L, FACRM, FAOTA, NZROT, delivered the lecture, guiding us through new perspectives on assessment and data within occupational therapy.
âThere are ways we can design and develop better assessments. Better because they are based on clear, conceptual foundations. Better because they use the most current and appropriate measurement technology for their intended purpose. And better because they empower key partners to make collaborative decisions.â
Thank you, Dr. Mallinson, for sharing your knowledge with us. Weâd also like to extend many congratulations to our 2026 Slagle Award Recipient Shelly J Lane, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA!

At a compelling international breakfast presentation, Odeth Richardson, BSc, MSc, PG Cert, explored the paradox of the weary healerâchallenging occupational therapy practitioners to explore rest as a meaningful occupation, discussing the barriers that exist, and providing strategies to prioritize themselves.
âRest is not an indulgence. Itâs an occupational necessity...Burnout, compassion fatigue, and tiredness donât just affect us and our patients. It affects our outcomes as well. Ethically, our duty of care extends to ourselves.â
