20 years ago today marked the last weekend of the iconic presentation of the film “Mandarin Ducks” in the Dutch pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale.   Jeroen de Rijke and Willem de Rooij represented the Netherlands at this edition; we were asked to sculpt the space with them. Curated by Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen.   In remembrance of Jeroen (1970-2006) #art #artproduction #exhibition #installation #venice #biennale

Throwback Thursday. The wildest work of art that I’ve made to date: The Glass Ceiling, part of Panorama 2000, from the summer of 1999. “In a certain sense the work Glass Ceiling (1999) by Otto Berchem is just that: a glass ceiling. In another way it is a lot more. A show-box of every-day life. A real-world peep-show. Glass Ceiling was Berchem’s contribution to Panorama 2000, a blockbuster exhibition organized in the city of Utrecht in the spring of 1999. Arguably, his show took the extramural hype set by exhibitions such as Chambres d’Amis (Gent, 1986) to new heights – at least in a literal sense. Panorama 2000 was set up around the principle that all the large-scale artworks, which were spread over the city, could be seen from one central point: the top of the 112-meter high cathedral (Dom) tower. Berchem fully used the potential of this unorthodox vantage point by simply replacing a roof of a penthouse apartment by a glass ceiling, thus opening the dwelling to the prying eyes of the spectator. As if penetrating the roof with X-ray vision, the visitors of Panorama could catch residents Rob and Dorien Timmerman in their own home, busy with their daily routine. It is obvious how Berchem’s work taps into issues such as transparency, privacy, and surveillance. Indeed, as one critic established, his intervention turned the dwelling into a prison, with an architecture that is legible in each of its parts, designed for maximum observation. The unusual perspective confirms this interpretation. The city is reduced to a single optic field, observed from one central tower – Panopticon anyone? The God perspective is, of course, a strong architectural articulation of an extremely lopsided power relation. The spectator is in the dominant position. He or she is the Eye, whose gaze penetrates deep into the private lives of residents. (continues)
