#anyhowtherecord 5/11 đď¸ The Breaker
The Breaker is a reminder that when life feels out of control, at least weâre still sitting in the driverâs seat (for better or worse).
I wrote the first idea for this song when I was coming out of a year-long rut, realizing that I was self-sabotaging and blaming my sadness on other people in my life. When I brought it to Nick, I actually never thought it would go anywhere (a common themeđ), but he insisted we that try recording it (another common themeđ¤). After several sessions with Nick and Noah, I still hadnât finished the lyrics. I called @alexcrosslandmusic , one of my favorite writers. I rambled about the song and listened to his wisdom. Ultimately, I finished the lyrics later that night. Turns out, talking about it does help. -Dan
#anyhowtherecord 4/11 đď¸ Magical Madge
âMadgeâ started out as a homage to Elliott Smith that was mainly a joke until Dan insisted we cut it live to hear how it sounded. After a couple takes, I went back and rewrote the lyrics. Iâm gonna choose to allow for some room for mystery re: whoâor whatâMadge is, but I will say that itâs a song about diving into your art unapologetically and accepting all of the consequences that might come with that choice. Because otherwise life is so boring? We all need Madge in our livesâ the artist / entertainer who is willing to epically fail so that we can all feel a little deeper, laugh a little harder, and make contact with the things that make us human. -Nick
#anyhowtherecord 3/11 đď¸ Perfectly Honest
Another song born out of an old riff that my friend recently admitted âyouâve been trying to fit into a song for 8 years.â Guilty as charged but also it would have remained in musical purgatory had Dan not picked out the cooler parts of it and set it on a path to be Perfectly Honest. This song is about feeling incapable of opening up fully to someone, despite how desperately you both want the truth to come out. Getting to the heart of the matter can sometimes feel as invasive as open heart surgery, or a task only a miracle could perform. And then once itâs out, you somehow have to make it feel welcome in the room, which can be an even heavier lift. We had to wear earplugs on top of our headphones to record the guitars because the amps were so loud. Likely the angstiest moment on the album. -Nick
#anyhowtherecord 2/11 đď¸ Harder Than Before
Harder Than Before, The Breaker, and Daggers are kinda like this âunholy trinityâ to meâthis little cluster of songs about not knowing how to help yourself out, so you just dig yourself deeper into the hole.
I wrote this song at a time when a lot of my friends were really going through it, and whenever Iâd talk to any of them about it, they would describe in detail how deeply they were hurting, then somehow undercut it at the end of the conversation with a comment like âbut Iâve been through worse before, so whatever haha.â I hate that itâs human nature to downplay our emotions when weâre hurting, but Iâm just as guilty as the next guy. This song is about thatâhow we brush off our issues until thereâs a mess at our feet. -Dan
#anyhowtherecord 1/11 đď¸ Anyhow Theme
Gonna try and post one of these a day to chat a little bit about the record we dropped earlier this month and give each song its due diligence. âAnyhow Themeâ was a song that popped up about mid way thru the writing/recording process. I was kicking around the main guitar line and melody for nearly 6 years, and when I played it for Dan he immediately started adding to it. It took a while to nail lyrically, but eventually we settled on this little prelude to the work as a whole. The narrator is probably the same guy who is singing in all the songs that followâsomeone searching for the grand prize of whatever it means to be human, which I guess is inner peace or total tranquility. You can run after it on a number of paths; redemption, solitude, falling in love⌠and failing miserably, yet still believing itâs accessible somehow, some way. Noah Pope brought it to life with his otherworldly sounds. Itâs our little zoomed out, existential appetizer for a record that simply gets louder when the big questions start to feel too large to tangle with. -Nick
