Locusts are grasshoppers that entered a party phase (swarming phase). Transformation from the solitary, low numbered grasshopper to the abundant, gregarious and migratory locust is triggered by suitable environmental conditions and rapid vegetation growth (like the kind following the break of a drought). Bands of wingless nymphs become swarms of winged adults. When locusts meet, they release serotonin, causing mutual attraction, a prerequisite of swarming. The powerful fliers can travel great distances, consuming much of the vegetation in their path. (From Wikipedia)
Being a locust sounds like a lot of fun. Lots of friends, flying and feasting. Consumption with carefree abandon!
As a human, I am often plagued with guilt thinking about the consumption systems I am inherently part of. Making #wearables out of old, donated, or found materials eases my mind a bit and channels the anxiety into something more playful. Of course I can't save everything from the landfill --it's just my little effort. It also inadvertently provides some nice challenges when #repurposing something made for one function into another.
This is deconstructed bike tires, #machineknit donated yarn, #silkscreenprint on the lining of one of my grandmother's scarves, and an acrobat suit I bought at #buffaloexchange in SF.

There is much to say about crystals and the self organizing principles of certain molecules. The slow accumulation of seemingly inanimate material is a fascinating processāmost minerals will form crystals when they have room to grow. What kinds of messages could be encoded in those structures? What cargo do they carry? But aside from the spiritual assignments people give to these materials, this is just another example of cool stuff happening in the earth. I like to make up my own crystal vessels and imagine them floating through space like spores on the breeze.

When people ask me what I like about living in Los Angeles, I often begin with praising the vegetation. It is so unique and practically interplanetary ā plants sprouting alien-looking appendages, smooth and undulating surfaces, technicolor spectrum foliage. The Huntington Library is one of my favorite attractions and every visit is a wondrous experience of peak level landscaping and plant edification.

Iāve always admired the work of Hilma af Klimt. As a pioneer of spiritual abstractionism in western art, she was deeply inspired by the theosophists and worked to visualize principles like unity of existence, universal truth and spiritual evolution through her meticulous drawings and paintings. I love her use of color and basic shapes in a search for common visual language to describe those unseen forces which shape a concrete physical reality.
Although there is, as with any spiritual movement, controversy in theosophy, I do like the unifying perspective of a shared common human experience. I connect with the idea of cultivating inner wisdom through a personal connection to the divine, using the body as a vehicle for spiritual evolution.

Realized I never posted this jacket I made last year. Made from the same crop of donated linen samples I processed into something wearable, adding freehand machine embroidery where I felt like it. The phoenix image came from an England-made tea set I got at a yard sale. Photos of me snapped by my father who still keeps my weird high school painting prominently displayed in the living room āŗļø
