PCOS now has a new globally recognised name: PMOS.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is now being referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) following a global initiative involving researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates across multiple countries.
Why the change?
For years, many experts and patients felt the term “PCOS” did not fully reflect the complexity of the condition. The name focused heavily on ovaries and “cysts,” despite the condition affecting far more than reproductive health alone.
PMOS better reflects the broader endocrine and metabolic impacts associated with the condition, including:
• hormonal imbalances
• insulin resistance and metabolic health
• mental and emotional wellbeing
• reproductive health
• long-term cardiovascular risks
The updated name and research were recently published in The Lancet as part of an international effort to improve awareness, diagnosis, understanding, and care for the more than 170 million women affected globally.
