NEW ACQUISITION
We are delighted to announce that
@pallanthousegallery has acquired the painting “Secret Language” (2024–25) by Antonia Showering.
Antonia Showering (b.1991) is a British figurative artist known for her enigmatic and psychologically complex works. Her paintings often unfold in domestic and interior spaces, where figures appear absorbed in their own thoughts, relationships, and emotional worlds. In “Secret Language,” these qualities take on added significance when considered in relation to motherhood, for the painting reflects the artist’s own experiences as both artist and mother.
Historically, motherhood has been both central to art and curiously obscured within it - frequently depicted yet rarely expressed from the inside. Showering’s work contributes to a growing number of contemporary artists (including
@carolinewalkerartist whose exhibition ‘Mothering’ is currently on show at the Gallery) who reclaim this space, foregrounding the psychological depth, ambiguity, and complexity of maternal experience.
By engaging with these themes, “Secret Language” also speaks to a broader rethinking of artistic production itself — challenging outdated distinctions between the studio and the domestic, and recognising how creativity and caregiving can coexist, inform, and reshape one another.
The painting was the centrepiece of Showering’s New York debut at
@timothytaylorgallery and has been generously funded by an anonymous donor. We are planning to place it on display
@pallanthousegallery next week.
