It’s been almost two years of traveling with CYCLEPATHS (BE, 2023) which is also the short lifetime for short films, marking it the happy end of my endless social media spamming about this project as well. 🐸
Some screenings left these last upcoming two months, two of which I am very excited:
@bitbangclub in Buenos Aires 🇦🇷
@animateka_festival in Ljubljana 🇸🇮 which I will be visiting as well in December to finalise the traveling.
Cyclepaths also received three more awards/mentions last two weeks: Special Mention at Ibrida festival 🇮🇹, Second Prize / Uncharted Identities at Denver Digerati 🇺🇸 and Best Belgian Film at Obskuur Ghent Film Festival 🇧🇪
As cliché and repetitive as it may sound: Thank you to all the programmers, jurors, filmmakers, festival directors and audiences that liked but also those that hated or criticised the film. I am proud to have heard very dividing opinions on the work which was sometimes very tiring, but very rewarding food for thought in my progress. I can only wish my next project to polarise just as much… Disturbing cinema for the global hyperbolic disturbing realities we find ourselves in.
It was really great to meet so many people and visit so many places! Now back to work 💾

I have been burning for a while to share my enthusiasm of being part of the selection for @dokleipzig where my short Cyclepaths will have its German Premiere! 🇩🇪
Considering this being a very old and politically unique festival focused on documentary and animation, my film feels like it is at its place. As the film is an experimental animation-essay reflecting on conflict and political tension; while taking a lot of inspiration from documentary styles and avant-garde. With Soviet filmmakers such as Dziga Vertov. 🚂
Another inspiration for the film are the paintings from the German expressionism . For years they influenced my work in showing me the horrors of war and the dehumanisation and loss of values within polarising societies that have ceased communicating. Those artists’ use of lighting and colours feel timeless, and certainly today.
This is the first time I am showing a work in Germany and I’m so happy the first time is with this film - at this festival.
💀 The film will screen in the cinema, but also in the beautiful Train Station of Leipzig on Friday the 13th of October where I will join for a Q&A. 💀

Thursday 15th June. Day of the official screening of my shortfilm CYCLEPATHS @annecyfestival 2023, this evening.
5 years ago I came here as a student and my eyes were opened to the magical world of animation. So screening my film here at the biggest animation event in the world feels very surreal.
Last week I was also in Vienna for the Vienna Shorts festival for its international premiere and was honoured to take part in such an amazing city with an incredible selection of the finest contemporary avant-garde films in animation.

Vandaag één clip voor de prijs van twee nummers:
- Joeri is verliefd (maar het is niet wederzijds)
- Zijn hart ligt op de grond (maar dat heelt wel met wat tijd)
Een ontsnappingspoging uit de gore gangen en doffe kieren waar ik twee nummers geleden (‘Welgekomens’, weet je nog?) plots in terecht kwam. ‘Ik zie u’ bracht niet veel beterschap, misschien brengt deze wel wat hoop? Ik weet het al, jullie nog niet.

Ik blijf het verbazend vinden hoe hij mijn chaotisch gebazel over ‘nachtmerries vol gemene joeri’s, angstige herinneringen, ontsnappingsballonnen en zelfsabotage’ heeft weten te kneden tot deze 9 minuten durende trip (link in biooo)

Beneath the CGI world of the first lies a constant tremor of latent catastrophe: guns, drones, and lonesome landscapes form a sonic atmosphere that feels hauntingly familiar.
In both films, time is cyclical rather than progressive, and cities are reimagined as unstable, self-referential environments. They examine how systems outlive the individuals moving within them. In 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘺𝘮𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘺, we take an uncanny car ride through a Moscow flipped on its head, watching architectural styles drift past while a distorted Soviet anthem, reminiscent of Aphex Twin, anchors the journey.

⛈️ First graphical animation test is finished with multiple shaders I have been experimenting with since last summer.
⛅️ Instantly regained all my energy for this project when I saw these textures and colours dance on the screen for the first time after a few months of distractions.
