One more round of Irulan on stage photos!
I was excited by the opportunity Cosplay-Eh provided me to explore what Dune could look like adapted to the stage, even if for a ~2-minute piece. I had a lot of fun pulling together some of my favourite influences from the books and films, aiming to summarize Dune/the first two films for an audience that might not know the story. The Dune Part 3 teaser dropped during the late stages of my con crunch, which was the last bit of motivation I needed to get this project across the finish line!
I look forward to seeing how Irulan’s role in Dune Messiah will play out on the screen for Dune Part 3. 🎞️

What I like to call the “benevolent ruler pose” from presenting Princess Irulan for Cosplay-Eh!
This first image is probably my favourite pose from the performance. As a dancer and someone who likes to talk with my hands, I took the approach of “choreographing a speech” - I wanted to make sure key moments were underscored with unique poses or hand gestures! This pose is the most classic/theatrical looking one, for a poignant moment where Irulan states her ability to shape the narrative of history.

It was at times a stressful crunch getting ready to compete in Cosplay-Eh, but for me the biggest reward is being able to share what I’ve made on stage!

I had a blast performing my Magical Girl choreography at the Anime Ottawa Dance Showcase. 🎀 I was really inspired to take poses and movements from Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, but to make them feel more dance-worthy!

I do love a good hall shot! It’s especially fitting for a cosplay like Irulan that borrows so much influence from haute couture fashion; it’s an ensemble that feels runway / red carpet ready. ✨

My goals for the skit were to retell Dune in 2 minutes and 30 seconds, use some stage props to drive home the key points, and also highlight Irulan’s role in the story. I hope you all enjoyed watching it - and that if you’ve never read or seen Dune before, this makes you curious to check it out.

Story time ✍️
After competing in the Anime Ottawa 2025 masquerade I knew it was time to attempt Princess Irulan. It was a stretch to get her ready in time for Ottawa Comic Con - and while I was proud of what I made, I wanted another shot at it. So I decided to just go for it and submit it to Cosplay-Eh!
Reworking Irulan was at times rewarding and challenging. Upgrading the dress, sleeves, and remaking the cape were fun opportunities to go back and add improvements. Adding to the dress meant that the hand cut diamond tally now sits at 973(!). Sourcing more clear reference photos led me to realize Irulan wears pants underneath the dress (🤯 - I previously thought it was a skirt), and that led to a journey of learning how to make pants and far more mockups than I’d care to admit while obsessing over pant fitting. I will never look at a pair of pants the same way again! 👖
I was drawn to Cosplay-Eh! mainly for the longer time permitted to perform on stage and the kinds of storytelling that permitted. I wanted to challenge myself with a character like Irulan, who is more serious and subtle. Writing my own script, cutting together my favourite songs from the Dune soundtrack, recording my voiceover and putting together my stage props unleashed the theatre kid in me that I hadn’t fully visited in a while. 🎭
The journey to present at Cosplay-Eh! could have been a lot more stressful and isolating had it not been for the fantastic community surrounding it. Thank you @fant0mie for setting up the group chat so we could cheer each other on while we got ready to compete! It was an honour to be included in such a powerhouse lineup of cosplayers alongside you, @lulu_a_la_mode and @shdwstrm 💗
