For this week’s #SKselects, Ben Polsky, Director of Operations and Exhibitions at Sean Kelly shares an inside look into Room with Altered Window, 1973 by Anthony McCall. “In this photograph, we see what appears to be a naturally occurring phenomenon—sunlight beaming through a shade into a darkened, isolated space. Interior particulates define the light as its pathway partitions the room. However, the elements in this photograph are not by chance—as the title reveals—this is a deliberate altering by the artist. The artist covered his windows in blackout fabric and purposefully incised a neat, angled slit into one of the coverings. Instantly, a window-light blade focused into the darkened room, articulated across the space by dust particulates in the converted factory air. Anthony McCall immediately lit a cigarette to increase the visible effect, grabbed his camera, and documented the ephemeral achievement. Room with Altered Window marks McCall’s earliest realized work with light as his primary artistic medium. While fleeting in the moment, what was revealed became the origin for his renowned Solid Light installations; the idea that a film could be three dimensional. Today, Anthony McCall is recognized as one of the pioneers of immersive art. What started as a notion, executed economically through immediate materials, has been progressively honed through the artist’s inexhaustible engagement with film as a three-dimensional environment. Anthony McCall has accomplished much since beckoning rendered light from his studio window in 1973. His sustained commitment, along with the acclaim and recognition he has earned, makes it clear that the sunlight passing through his altered window was never meant to dim.” Image: #AnthonyMcCall, Room with Altered Window, 1973 / 2018, gelatin silver print mounted on museum board and aluminum, image: 33 3/4 x 50 1/2 inches, framed: 39 3/4 x 56 1/8 x 1 3/4 inches © Anthony McCall Courtesy: the artist and Sean Kelly, New York @anthonymccallstudio #SeanKellyGallery

e-flux is pleased to present a collaborative screening and live performance by Jeff Preiss and Anthony McCall. The evening opens with the premiere of Beckoning Cats (2025), a new film by Preiss created specifically for this occasion, and continues with a reimagined performance that revisits a collaborative work originally presented during the final exhibition at the experimental gallery Orchard in 2008. Jeff Preiss @jpdogs is a filmmaker, cinematographer, and visual artist active since the 1980s. A founding member of the experimental gallery Orchard and former co-director of Films Charas, Preiss’s work spans narrative and experimental cinema, with films preserved by Anthology Film Archives and the Andy Warhol Foundation. His projects have been shown internationally at venues including MoMA and the Stedelijk Museum, and have involved collaborations with artists such as Joan Jonas, Andrea Fraser, Josiah McElheny, and Anthony McCall. Anthony McCall @anthonymccallstudio is a New York-based artist known for his iconic “solid light” works, which occupy a space between sculpture, cinema, and drawing. Emerging from the avant-garde film scene of the 1970s, his seminal film Line Describing a Cone (1973) established a foundational approach to expanded cinema. McCall’s practice engages with architectural space, duration, and audience perception, often using haze, projection, and minimal geometry to create immersive environments. His work has been exhibited widely at institutions including Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Hamburger Bahnhof, and MoMA. This program is curated by Sanna Almajedi @sanna.nyc , Performance Curator at e-flux, and Lukas Brasiskis @lukasbrasiskis , Film Curator at e-flux.
