Media professionals, technologists, and storytellers gathered in Toronto on March 6, 2026, for the First Fridays Toronto – Media & AI Edition, an event examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping journalism and digital storytelling within the Black community.
The evening featured conversations with prominent media voices including Donovan Vincent of the Toronto Star, Shari Keen of The Globe and Mail, and Moses A. Mawa, CEO of Afroglobal Television, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
Speakers explored the growing role of AI in the newsroom, the ethical challenges of emerging technologies, and how Black-owned media organizations can adapt and innovate in an increasingly digital landscape. From the technology sector, Perry Douglas, CEO of 6ai Technologies, provided insight into how AI models and automation are transforming creative industries and media production.
Creative professionals Masani Montague and Kerry Lee Crawford also highlighted the opportunities that new digital tools provide for independent creators to expand and redefine Black narratives.
The event underscored the importance of ensuring that technological innovation in media continues to support diverse voices, cultural storytelling, and community-centred journalism.
