i know damie’s art circulates around the internet very often, but seeing it on Pinterest this time around gave me spiritual heartburn. the automated sorting system determines her most famous work is “creepy-dead-core” or “weird-dream-core”…or most appropriately “heaven-core”. the internet has created an aesthetic for my dead friend and even in their version of her she is dead. i miss her deeply down in my gut. 💔🕊️🪶
last night marked the final gathering of the first ever Coney Island Film School! a lot of you have been asking me about this and seemed confused when i tried to explain why i was going to coney island multiple times a week. no, it’s not an accredited program. it’s not a real college program at all. it was pure creative energy and inquisitive spirit, wrangled expertly by @dylanmarsgreenberg . it was an honor being her student and getting educated by a real artist, someone who puts in the work consistently and is not afraid to experiment. it was a huge undertaking putting together something like this. tons of logistics and people to manage. very inspirational. this all lit a fire under my ass to keep creating and trying things i haven’t done before.
the theme of my film Make Them Buy It! was “play”. duke and sly are two grown men who stumble around coney island during the off season and indulge each others delusions of grandeur. when we’re children, we often “yes-and” each other with an instinctual ease that could make any improv actor jealous. that creative spirit and dream never left duke. for sly, play is a method of distraction. it’s up for debate whether or not any of his hollywood experience is real. we’ve all met kids that are pathological liars, haven’t we? when helping one of my classmates film, two children playing with dolls interrupted our shot. in that moment, i realized i made the right decisions. there will always be children on the beach playing and imagining, just as there will always be adults right next to those kids, suffering in adult ways. coney island is a wonderful place for fun, but it also breeds seediness. that’s what i wanted to portray in MTBI!
thank you so much to @neko_fellini and @jacob_comeau123 for being my lovely actors and traveling for this. i appreciate you greatly. this film could not have existed without you guys. you made me buy it. love you guys ❤️
