“The Periphery” - By Locus.
Last year we had the opportunity to install @western_window_systems , at this breathtaking rural home in the remote Southern Utah desert. Big thanks to our friend Anson at Locus for letting us help his vision come to life.
Capitol Hill House, 2017. Design, construction and interiors by me for www.locus.studio.
This MCM was built in 1958 on a steep lot above the State Capitol in Salt Lake City. Largely original when we bought it in 2016, a complete gut remodel needed to honor the original while replacing every element and surface most of which were beyond repair. We completed the extensive work in early 2018 and sold the property.
The guest suite. We think of guest spaces like hotel rooms. Self contained and luxurious but as small as possible without feeling tight. Tall ceilings often result in a space that lacks intimacy and a feeling of protection and coziness. We dropped the bathroom and entry ceilings and the cove beamed ceilings feels good at about 11 feet and provides a sense of scale and openness. Small spaces, tall ceilings. But not too tall. The window wall, with insect screen, opens to the deck and the Escalante National Monument beyond.
Cohesion. When every element, irrespective of size or purpose, conspires to make perfect sense together. We cannot achieve cohesion without obsessing over every detail from design to completion including interiors and furnishings. Here we created a custom console for the HiFi Dolby Atmos 4k projection theater in the living space - off the shelf solutions just weren’t sufficient. The screen is hidden in the angled slot between beams. Cables are run below the floor in conduit with carefully detailed openings above and access panels below - planned from the very beginning to accommodate changes over the decades to come. Acoustics are carefully considered in every space and addressed using the architecture and hidden absorbers. Cohesion. And @genelec_usa
