Director Stijn Geenen (@stijngeneen ) has made a compelling documentary about elderly inmates in need of care at Merksplas Prison. โ€œAchter de tralies van de tijd (Behind the bars of time)โ€ sheds light on the lives of 22 convicted prisoners and detainees, as well as two nurses, in Ward 1 of that prison. Some refer to this ward as the โ€œforgotten cornerโ€ of Merksplas. For @destandaard The documentary โ€œAchter de tralies van de tijd โ€ opens in theaters on May 13.

The lovely Matthijs Van Mierlo, the Belgian content creator behind The Gaze, a series of social media channels on which he talks about art with obvious enthusiasm. His videos strike a balance between informing and entertaining, making art history accessible without oversimplifying it. Today, this approach has earned him a huge audience: hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, resulting in millions of views and likes. In Brussels, Liora Gancarski and her foster son Hassan (see last photo) decided to open their home to an Afghan family who had applied for asylum. Liora says she is ashamed of her Belgian government, which allows refugee families with children to sleep on the streets and which significantly tightened asylum policy in the summer of 2025. The Afghan Farhad, his wife and their two children (who wish to remain anonymous) are, in turn, ashamed of their situation, which is lasting much longer than they had anticipated. They have been living for several months in the damp basement beneath the house, equipped with a small bathroom, some toys and an extra mattress. The family is one of four families who, in September 2025, brought criminal charges against the Belgian Minister for Asylum and Migration, Anneleen van Bossuyt (N-VA), for โ€˜inhuman and degrading treatmentโ€™ and โ€˜endangering personsโ€™. Belgium has been failing to provide adequate housing and protect the human rights of asylum seekers since 2021, Amnesty International writes in a report from April this year. Single men have been routinely refused since August 2023, despite negative advice from the Belgian Council of State. At the time, this exclusion was explained as a necessity to โ€˜prevent families with children from ending up on the streetsโ€™. In early April 2026, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ruled that Belgium had treated four asylum seekers in a degrading manner. The asylum seekers were forced to survive on the streets of Brussels for months, despite the fact that various courts had repeatedly ordered the Belgian authorities to provide them with accommodation.
